13-2 is good, and you really don't need to know much about 13 walking in (I barely remembered a thing when I played it). Monster farming isn't that bad, story is not completely awful, and what-if endings are great.
Lightning Returns is also pretty good, really good gameplay and replayability (have to do new game + at least once for everything) but plot shits the bed really quick.
13 is not worth it, since you can skip it for the better games of the series. It has minimal side-content and the main story is crazy linear. Calm lands opens things up late game, but not by much.

XIII-2 is the best. It has the best characters and story. XIII is next. It's pretty shit but My Hands is great and it feels the most like a FF game of the three. LR is trash. I have no idea why people are telling you that it's the best or in any way good.
LR is a dumpster fire of a fucking game. It's boring, it's repetitive, the characters suck ass, all of the character development through the previous two games is erased, the plot is nonsensical shit, the gameplay is a step down, and the ending is one of the worst I've ever seen.

This isn't really true. In XIII-2 Noel is a brand new protag and Serah was basically just a plot device in XIII. Sazh, Fang and Vanille barely exist in XIII-2. XIII-2 puts the awful L'Cie/Fal'cie/Cieth shit on the back burner and start a new adventure with a new crisis and a new villain. The bits of plot from the first game incorporated into the second are all pretty much re-explained, easy to figure out, or just not necessary to know.
LR is a continuation of what XIII-2 starts.
