there is a thing called technique op, attacking the sword welders joints, getting close enough he can't swing his sword, there are many monk weapons that are fist weapons, like deer horn daggers, katas, claws.
Plus being monk doesn't mean you go completely weaponless. Monks have a sword style, staff, sythe, sai, spear, nunchaku, almost all weapons that are in thier basic form. Monks just use armor because it fucks up mobility.
