grimdark scifi sc1 was 100% goat but sc2 wasn't really all that bad. units are very identifiable and if you take the style independent of sc1 it pulled off every unit and the overall look pretty well. many other RTS games are not nearly as readable as sc2.

unfortunately the fact that its story went the same way in tone and turned into hollywood tier garbage sort of indicates the change in artstyle was more about misunderstanding their own game and general shit taste than just trying something new and making the game more visually readable. that's not even mentioning all the ways they fucked up gameplay compared to bw. there just should have been more of a compromise on readability and the sc1 aesthetic.

I think the graphics in SC2 looks great. It runs on a toaster, you can immediately see what's going on, units are easily recognised, and the gameflow is generally smooth as fuck. It's the exact same with D3.

It's a perfect example where graphics go hand to hand in gameplay.

I want to imagine that Bethesda has access to a time machine and brings programmers from the 90s to work on their games. Most normal companies would say "oh shit, maybe we should use a new engine to make an actual moving train", Bethesda's programmers said "let's make the train a hat that an invisible NPC wears". Not even a /k/fag but these triggered the hell out of me. The idea of these ungodly abominations doing anything other than exploding in the face of the user was too much even for Fallout. Why the fuck don't all these people have real guns 250 years after the apocalypse? They should have working factories by the time the game starts. Such a stupid way to make real guns feel valuable. Creep was something I really liked forward to seeing in 2. The dialog described it as "the land is alive" which made me imagine as this twisting and writhing mass of flesh stretching out before you, covering everything as a kind of meatscape. I imagined the horror and discomfort of the Marines traversing it as they're constantly wary of sinking in and being swallowed as the "ground" gives way and moans beneath them. I imagined that the game just couldn't handle this yet but the sequel would make an honest attempt at really showing the horror of the zerg.

Imagination is for children, it seems.

Blizz really fucked up with the SC2 expansion units. I already thought SC2 lacked something with the units. Hoped expansions would peak my interest but nope. Brood War introduced Lurkers, Medics, fucking badass Dark Templars. Most Brood War units felt badass. What did SC2 expansions give us? A new floating Protoss orb? A Terran mech on tank treads shooting missiles!? A new protoss ship that does aoe damage!?!? Oh... my... GOD, the hype is fucking REAL! SC2 units are such a snooze fest. Where the hell is the impact? I really dislike how they fucked with the zerg in SC2. Overlords used to have a fucking terrifying pigelephant monster face with red eyes that made absolutely horrifying sounds that have stuck with me since I was a kid even though I haven't played it in ages. Now they're drooling cuddly plush toys that make indistinct slobbering noises. Mutalisks too: that screech they had had in SC1 was amazing and the fleshy, veiny mouth looked genuinely horrifying and disgusting. Now I don't know what they're supposed to look like and I can't for the life of me remember how they sound.

Zerg now are just kinda bizarre but the zerg I remember were legit the stuff of nightmares.

The armor parts themselves don't look that bad, a little on the thin side but otherwise salvageable. Its the weird synthskin texture imo thats the problem, probably there because they decided to make the armor "sleek" but it just looks worse. The teal highlight also doesn't do it any favors. Never played the halo games past 3 so not sure if theres a story reason for the thinner armor but yeah its definitely a downgrade in the aesthetics department compared to the other two

My biggest gripe is the fact that the second artist couldn't wrap his head around the original scene and painted something completely soulless.

In the first piece we see that those who can hide behind the dragon are apparently safe and confident, as if something makes them above mundane matters and having a huge creature as a body guard confirms that. Then there are those mini scenes to the right:
>the two females fighting, the dark elf is angry and wielding magic, which is making the sword wielder step back as threatened
>the dorf and the halfling are facing an ogre, the dorf is clearly impressed by the size of the thing but still is apparently motioning to the halfling to step back, a defensive posture showing willingness to fight but also awareness of the danger of doing so

That games maps, and RA2's (for different reasons) were just lovely to look at. The light, the ambiance, the world... it was something to marvel at.

Sonce then however, the CNC games have had the most shit boring maps ever. EA pushed 'muh-esports!' and the maps became these plain, flat, symmetrical landscapes completely and utterly devoid of personality. No love or care was it into making them, or making them even look like they make sense as real landscapes. Perhaps that is what is missing in modern RTS. Landmasses barely ever formulate into symmetrical hunks. Whatever.

Rest in Peace CnC, Rest in Peace Westwood. I still love you CnC, even in spite of Tiberium Twilight.

I hate how SC2 butchered the aesthetics of the various races.
For example, in SC1, the protoss had a sleek, and advanced looking aesthetic, that still retained bulk where it was needed, and overall, their stuff looked like advanced alien technology.
In SC2 however, they just have glowing gems and gaudy jewelry everywhere, and their tech looks more like magic than technology. They look more home at WoW than in Starcraft.
Just compare this dragoon render from sc1 to Immortals and Stalkers.
