Do you prefer the more original 320x200 toaster rendering in Quake to higher resolution modes? Anything starting 640x480 and upwards feels completely different. Even the gamma seems to behave differently.

Not my screenshots, but I tried playing it like this in Dosbox, got quite dizzy because setting fov beyond default 90 removes the weapon. Now playing at 640x480 in TyrQuake at around 110 fov.

Once I get some weed I will host a future vs fantasy quest server in the next week on east coast.

Future vs Fantasy quest was a first of its kind thing. It is a class based mod where classes have extreme strengths and weaknesses. Quest mode allows you to coop through the game against enemies that have like 16x, 32x as much health as default.

It saves your character progress to a file, you level up and get new weapons etc. It would feel extremely rudimentary to many people now, but it was the first of its kind for a shooter game

It's just fun too. You have classes like a ninja who has a grappling hook and exploding bombs, poison darts etc

I liked Quake 2 the best out of all the titles.

The Xatrix expansion, Reckoning reuses a lot of the original game's models for it's added content, only creating new models for like one enemy and 2 weapons, a handful of swamp textures and new skins for regular enemies to show that they're "upgraded" with a power shield. Map design is OK.

The Rogue expansion, Ground Zero is much better all around.

Same, I wanted those characters from Q3A to have abilities from the start. At the time I imagined that only in a specific gamemode though. QC is pretty much a dream game to me.

I'm replaying Q2 and I'll try Team Arena (singeplayer) after because it's the only official Quake thing I didn't play.

Then it'll be Q3 mods I played at the time to make a nostalgia trip before Quakecon (Bid For Power, Western Quake 3 and other weird ones if I find them)

Anyone with half a brain that can draw squares that connect to other squares can make a doom level.
Quake editing is far more complex since you need to build the rooms wall by wall, sculpt the brushes (walls) the shape you want them, place them so that there aren't any holes, make the designs interesting enough to catch the eye, place lighting objects everywhere so you can actually see, compile the map, run the map over and over etc.

It was called "Niflheim Souls Feast" a MP mod where the characters were demons. They could fly and had complex and flashy abilities.

No, fucking why? They developed this wonderful 3D engine for a reason, so the levels would be more vertical but also so it would be scalable. Why would you cripple the experience by using low resolutions? Back when it came out it looked uglier than Duke 3D.

I started trickjumping in like 2001 (overdrivepc/fatjumps time) and even back in the days freestyle tricking was basically the thing to do. It took years until defrag became a thing within this sub-genre.

I really miss the movement skill ceiling from quake. No other game every made reproduced it besides maybe reflex and warsow but no one plays that shit and reflex is still in alpha and will probably be canceled now that qc is going to happen.

The problem is the combat is the mutant hybrid of doom, quake, and even unreal 1. They wanted a lot of enemies like doom, but wanted 3d levels like quake, but enemies with a skillset like unreal. But ypu can't put all of those together at their full potential or it would be impossible as fuck. So they designed a game where as long as you're moving you basically won't get hit. The problem is unlike the older games you don't have to plan where you move. You don't prioritize targets.

That is a really good explanation of it. Now like I said, I'm an FPS guy, I played these games starting in 1994 with Doom 2.

And when I played Doom 4 after a couple levels my instinct was "the enemies are too good"...I want the enemies to be worse. I want them to be less deadly. I want to have to move less.

This isn't going to be a popular opinion here because people are so focused in dickwaving here. But the intensity that they imparted into the game ISN'T GOOD because that ISN'T WHAT I PLAY SINGLE PLAYER FOR!

In a single player game you want to feel like god, like you are fucking OWNING the enemies. Crysis had this same problem, with guys surviving headshots and the suit running out of power in 5 seconds. Instead of the suit making you feel strong like it was supposed to, it made you feel weak

The "qte shit" actually serves to encourage dangerous gameplay getting in close quarters. You have to be constantly on the move on the highest difficulty to avoid near instant deaths and the qtes are a small compensation to allow you to take more damage more frequently making the game a more intense experience. Yeah its different from old doom but that ship sailed with doom 3, at least 4 is a good game.

the whole weapon balance is kinda wonky in d4.
just look at how many rl hits you need for cacos or mancubi for example. it takes like ages to kill them but that is expected because of the way the engine handles enemy spawns.
not sure but I think there can only be like 20 or something monster at the same time on the map, people tested that shit in snapmap so its natural that they tried to balance the quantity with quality by giving the monster more health.

Needless looping =/= nonlinearity

You still have to complete the level in a specific sequence. Explosive jumping is an exploit since it was not considered when the levels were being created. id did not intend for players to reach areas early through advanced movement mechanics. Verticality was only there to take advantage of the fully 3D engine. Not a decision on id's part to make the games less linear.

Yes, but it requires a different engine.

You can make non-Euclidean stuff (rooms bigger on the inside, hallways longer on one side than the other, etc) in the Portal versions of Source, and Source shares 80% of its map-related lineage with id tech and the Quake engine. Hammer is just a renamed Worldcraft editor.

While Quake maps do involve linear progression, they also have their share of nonlinear progression thanks to all that "needless looping". Take for example E2M2, you need to jump into the room with the Shambler and take the gold key to then open the gold door and reach the exit, however, there are multiple routes all along the level before and after those steps. You don't have to cross the bridge at the start, you can jump in the moat. Just jumping in the moat completely flips the encounters in the level around as opposed to going through the obvious bridge route. The way the moat route loops back into the center of level puts you in different positioning in relation to the enemy encounters, and let's not forget that you also get different weapons and powerups too along this route, it gives a totally new experience to the level.

There is nothing that comes close to that in this poor and subpar episode made by some mediocre mapper that only used his connections with Bethesda to get the gall to pass this off as Episode 5 of Quake. The areas in the levels of this episode are compartmentalized, isolated and there is almost always only one singular entrance to each encounter. It's very static. It's a poor imitation of Quake.

the design of quake has nothing to do with "lovecraft". the levels have specific texture themes like base, elder world, wizard, medieval.

Quake's bosses use names stolen from lovecraft and are supposed to be elder horrors. that's the extent of it
