I just finished it for good, save file deleted and all.

Feels like I'm missing stuff, apparently there's a book I need to read to get the whole story. Where do I get that?

Also I heard there were two different versions of the game, what's the differences?

Wasn't the 2nd version just to please the japanese crowd because the main character wasn't femenine enough?

Because it looks like shit at first glance, and I want to hear some actual opinions
>>

No the two different protags were created at the same time. Papa Nier was made because Cavia tjought westerners wouldn't be able to relate to a sibling story as much as a offspring story

>and I want to hear some actual opinions
You already said that you keep seeing ''/v/ constantly sucks this game's dick'' so you probably have already seen opinions of the people here on this game.

If you want to check it out just check it the fuck out.

Or maybe were you planning to make some ''/v/ told me that this game is was good but it was actually trash'' thread in the future?

OP here, I'll give you my opinion. I think it's a bit of an ugly game with a pretty rough combat system. There was no lockon and a lot of the weapons felt ineffective. It took me a while to get used to, but eventually I fell into a decent rhythm. The bosses are pretty fun though, they're interesting and have lots of cool bullet hell patterns and are enjoyable to fight since it's less about jumping around and hitting one or two enemies that got behind you in the melee.

The setting was really small, like felt smaller than a N64 Zelda game. That said I really liked all the locations because they were interesting and atmospheric, and the story and world was pretty cool. There's a lot of sidequests to do and the game's dialogue is really well-written and amusing/emotional so there's an impetus to keep exploring and adventuring. I found all the characters to be relatable, though I saw the twists coming thanks to the game's reputation.

I really enjoyed it, though I think it's quite clearly unfinished and you have to play it a few times to get the whole thing. It was worth it, I reckon. The ending gave me a warm and fuzzy feeling. Worst thing about the game was no button to skip the credits.
>>
If you want to check it out just check it out is autism now, got it.

Let people who already played the game discuss it now, would ya?
>>
>>342706090
It's more like a pleasant surprise to most because they expected a shit game.
It's average in combat (though you may like it, I did), but it has amazing music, a pretty cool mindfuck story and it has no clue what genre it wants to be (I loved that).
It's not *amazing*, but definitely worth playing.
>>
>>342706691
>I think it's quite clearly unfinished

The game is clearly rough and a bit raw (becuase of the little SQUENIX budget) but unfinished?

Why would you think that?
>>
>>342705752
The story is slightly different, though very similar in the two versions. The main difference though is just the protagonist. The western release is Papa Nier, while the Japanese one is about Brother Nier. Theres minor changes in interactions and such, but overall the general story remains the same.

Well boys, here's praying Automata won't require too much knowledge of the first game, or all the Drakengard games, because jesus christ I don't think I could get through all that.

All I want is my fun Platinum action games with cute robogirls.
>>
>>342706958
Theres some really good LPs of the earlier games if you're interested, but I don't think any of the games relied heavily on knowledge of prior entries. You do benefit a bit from knowing them however, usually its just endings that matter however.
>>
>>342706598
He's right though. If you've seen /v/ praise it numerous times then what kind of answer do you expect now?

>autism

The Shadowlord's castle is quite clearly in a different area, if you look over the sides, but is accessible from the Lost Shrine. Also you get teleported directly to the Wolf boss fight instead of going their manually, even though it's an area on the map. The Forest of Myth is just one small area, even though there's clearly a hollow modelled on the tree, and all the main story there is done in text which while interesting is probably the easiest thing ever to program. The Scrap Pile goes down further and has multiple lifts, but you only ever see four floors, despite the fact that it's supposed to be a huge facility.

I didn't play the DLC but I get the feeling from those locations that they intended there to be more areas and dungeons.

Oh, also the Lighthouse, I was expecting some sort of payoff from that for some reason but there didn't seem to be any.

This is all about the budget in my opinoon.

Cavia never got much ''allowance'' from Square Enix.

And yeah, many subquest felt rushed alright.

If you really don't wanna play NIER then at least read a synopsis on it so you can enjoy any possible references in Automata.

Drakengard games aren't required, only thing that ties them together is the last ending in Drakengard 1 because NIER is the sequel to that ending, basically a what-if ending spiraling into its own spin-off series and its so much better than Drakengard as a whole. You really don't need to know anything from 2 or 3.

http://lparchive.org/Drakengard/
Seems like a mountain of boring reading right? Give it a chance though, I promise you its infinitely more fun than playing it yourself, guy who writes it is shitting on everything and posts videos of every important scene/gameplay so you're getting the full experience while laughing your ass off to his anguish.

Shadowlords castle is actually in abandoned Shinjuku
I still don't understand how that works though.
>>
>>342707458

I guess, that was just my impression that they initially wanted to do more but had to give up. Kinda like how Demon's Souls has an extra world in the game code that's nothing more than some level geometry and snow.

>>342707530

Yeah, my feeling was that you'd actually travel to the "castle" which was actuallly the abandoned city, then ride an elevator up to the Shadowlord's rooftop hideout, to tie into the prologue where you're in the snowy city.
>>
>>342707696
>Snowy city

That wasn't snow
>>
>>342707778

Oh fuck, really? They looked cold and stuff though.
>>
>>342707831
There's a reason why the opening song is called snow in summer.
>>
>>342707831
It's salt from people infected by White Chlorination Syndrome and died rather then become part of the legion. It's something not really talked about in the game so you'll have to dig outside of it to find out.
>>
What, probably secondary or minor , characters from Nier do you think will return in the second game?
>>
>>342708014
Caim will return.
It must happen.
>>
>>342708014

Well Emil's the most likely one, right?
>>
>>342708120
Because the robots invaders look like him or because he's something like the mascot of the series?
>>
>>342708245

Well just that he's pretty much indestructible and in an artificial body, so he'd survive for the centuries to get to Automata?
>>
>>342708286
I guess you're right.

I wonder what he did during the time between Nier and Nier 2.
>>
>>342708428

Searched for legs?
>>
>>342706958
You could easily appreciate the original Nier for what it was without playing the Drakengard games, I don't see why N:A should be any different.
>>
>>342707284
I'm just gonna put it in a pastebin because it's like 3 posts. Here:

I think they've confirmed Emil and Beepy

I also suspect at least one Grimoire will return
>>
>>342708472
Can't he just fly with his head?
>>
>>342708120
I dont want to see emil. If he comes back it will mean he will suffer. Cavia doesent let his characters have happy ends.

"Project Gestalt" proceeded smoothly for the most part despite many unstable factors. However, its fatal flaw of "Gestalts relapsing", combined with a product of coincidence - "Replicants attaining self-awareness" ultimately decided its failure. Since the original Gestalt, Gestalt Nier died, all "Gestalts" will eventually relapse and die out. As a result, since the "Replicants" possess no reproductive abilities and need to copy the Gestalt's data to regenerate their bodies, they will die out within this generation. It is not known whether Replicant Nier, who slew Gestalt Nier, put the destruction of the world at his own hands and Yonah on a balance and intentionally chose the latter or not. However, as long as a new original Gestalt remains to be found, humanity will certainly become extinct in the near future.

Aww. That's kinda sad, but at least Kaine and Yonah get to stay together for what's left.
