I think a lot of students in passing said something about being remorseful for Morooka, either through interacting with them or just hearing it on your walks to school. It goes along with a theme of the game where peoples opinions and memories are fickle or something or other.

I think it was important for the story and sense of urgency in the game to have a character that you actually know be a victim of the killings.
Everyone else is really unknown or only seen briefly. Having a teacher you've had for a while suddenly die does make it feel more like the killer is creeping his way into the inner circle of your relationships.
