Is this the best space combat game of all time?
Yes. Great mods out there too. More games need to go open source like freespace did, it does wonders for modding community.
Where can I get it?
>>342689948
On gog, pretty sure
>>342690417
Also Steam
>>342690417
>>342690493
Thanks. Would it be a good idea to get a joystick to play this? Or are the m+kb controls good?
>>342687647
yes
freelancer if you hit z to kill the engine and just burn for directional change is a close second
for top down, between spaz and starsector i dont know
for broadside, rebel galaxy
for rts, sins of a solar empire
avoid starpoint gemini 2
DIVE DIVE DIVE
HIT YOUR BURNERS, PILOT
X3 is pretty much just okay in the combat department.
But goddamn did that game have FS -tier scale from 1-on-1 dogfights to full on capital ship fleet engagements
>>342691482
real-time battles in Sword of the Stars are much better than Sins
I only recently realized the FSO port for FS2. But fuck me this install is taking a while. Why the fuck did I opt to install all mods?
>>342691954
Why did Sword of the Stars 2 have to be such a buggy piece of shit.
>>342687647
>download the open source thingy
>play for a bunch of hours
>there's a bug where going into the simulator wipes campaign progress
guess ill never play it again.
>>342692148
Kerberos always designed games that were way, way beyond their ability to complete. They've got incredible ideas, but they bite off more than they can chew. SOTS1 wasn't really amazing until Murder of Crows, I think. But SOTS2, with it's high-powered graphics on top of everything else - no, they were never, ever going to complete that game.
>>342687647
Why do people think Freespace has good space combat?
>>342692414
>no, they were never, ever going to complete that game.
Forgetting about content, it's a really REALLY buggy game. The UI seems to cause the game to gradually use more and more CPU the more turns you complete
>>342690757
Joystick is much better.
You want to smoothly traverse the fog. Someone should remake this level for level.
>>342692414
>Kerberos made up of a lot of Barking Dog Studios
>They made Homeworld: Cataclysm
How can you make such a top tier expansion, then fall so far?
>>342692575
Oh, that reminds me - is Cataclysm a part of Homeworld Remastered? I meant to take a look at that during the summer sale.
>>342692440
Because it does.
>>342692814
How? It looks boringly mediocre from everything I've seen.
>>342692903
Well, admittedly, it is a bit subjective, but I'm curious about what space sims you think have better combat.
>>342692747
No its not because Gearbox doesn't want to put in the work of recreating the missions, special abilities, and other engine features (10x time compression) since the source code for Cataclysm is lost. They will only do it with the source code, meaning they only want to touch up models and bug test mission scripts. Along with all their other faults, Gearbox is also lazy.
>>342692903
Atmosphere and scale.
No other game has you dodging giant laser beams while dogfighting around capital ships like freespace.
>>342693197
Ah, ok. Thanks.
>>342693241
>dodging giant laser beams
So you can move faster than light? That seems kind of dumb.
>>342692903
>looks
How about you play the game. Nuances like the ETS, shield management and the wingman commands can't be appreciated by watching someone else play.
>>342693241
Also, capital ships are actually effective, and battles between them are fun to watch.
>>342687647
yep
revival might do a spiritual successor to freespace after overload (they have the freespace writer working on that game too)
>>342693443
>How about you play the game.
Doesn't look enticing enough to bother.
Please don't do this
>>342692440
>>342692814
Freespace 2 is more wwii fighter in space. With the slow overall fighter speed and the serious lack of inertia control/thrust for 'gliding' manueveurs
>>342693607
Oh, I see. When you presented a question, you didn't actually want to understand why Freespace has good combat, you were just being a sarcastic dick.
>>342693607
Then you don't like space combat sims and this genre, and thread, isn't for you.
>>342690757
I've always played it with keyboard only.
Has anyone here tried out House of the Dying Sun? I'm scared off because of the Early Access sign but an Arcadey shooter does sound appealing.
If I had the money to get VR I'd definitely want to try that one.
>>342693781
Try not to get too defensive over your garbage game, honeybuns.
>>342693837
I do but Freespace isn't actual space combat. See yourself out, thanks!
>>342693881
havn't played it but apparently it's really short and doesn't really have much content but it is just in early access
Not even trying with this shitty bait.
>>342693909
You admit to being ignorant of the game's systems and are merely judging it superficially and then you have the gall to be pretentious and disparage the people who actually know what they are talking about. You're a real piece of work.
>>342694129
>You admit to being ignorant of the game's systems
Nope.
>>342694046
>this salt
wait a second and let me get some fish n chippies with vinegar to go with this
>>342694186
Didn't you just admit that you haven't played the game?
>>342694186
>I've never played the game
>I'm not ignorant
Pick one and only one
>>342694391
No?
>>342694393
Literally never said that.
>>342693647
Don't get me wrong, freespace is one of the best combat sims out there. It BTFO's the otherwise great (but casual af) Freelancer in its gameplay. The only thing I didn't like about the game ....well I'll just say that those who've played it will know
>>342694129
He's isn't doing any of these things, bro.
He's just shitposting, and you keep feeding him like the dumb git you are.
Back on topic - is SPAZ 2 any good?
>>342693680
Like star wars.
The cool way to fight in space.
>>342694519
SPAZ 2 is out?
>>342694441
You did.
>>342693607
>>How about you play the game.
>Doesn't look enticing enough to bother.
>>342694571
The best way to fight in space is on the cozy bridge of a massive warship with huge cannons firing at enemy vessels lightseconds away.
>>342693341
It's a video game you utter faggot. It is called a gameplay element, which are supposed to be entertaining and challenging, not necessarily realistic.
I wish I could fucking sterilize you.
>>342694723
I think you've got mixed up with who is who.
>>342694832
>B-BB-BUT IT'S A VIDEOGAAAAAAAAME
>>342693341
It's more like you move around enough so the anti-fighter frigates don't get a lock on you and miss with their anti-fighter beams. If you attack them head on you won't be able to dodge once they fire.
>>342694774
That might be the *best* way, but it's not the *coolest* way.
>>342693341
>>342694832
My bad, they're just "Beams"
http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Beam_weapon
When is the next part of Blue Planet coming out or is the project dead?
So is Strike Suit Zero good? Is the DLC and Infinity worth it? Director's cut or regular version?
>>342694629
Yep. Early access.
>>342695208
Oh fuck that shit
>>342694774
Another game that was unique
Friendly reminded that only real alternative is Star Citizen. Good luck running that game on a VR setup, gonna need some real horsepower.
>>342695334
which star trek game is this?
>>342695435
Bridge Commander

Freespace 1 was great too. Especially because of dat intro. I always love when games' intros are the sort of "slice of life" type thing, kind of like mechwarrior 2/3's intros.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJ-xcgBL1mY
>>342695163
I don't know when it's coming out, but I'm fairly sure it's not dead, since the first two parts of War in Heaven recently got voice acting. To be honest, I didn't really care for War in Heaven.
>>342695709
And the whole game has been ported to FS2 Open, which is really the best way to play it. They even have a remake of FS1's expansion, because the original wasn't very good.
>>342688287
But if they do that, they can't nickel and dime us with DLC, and if mods extend a game's life, they can't get us to buy a new rehash every year. The devs probably wouldn't be bothered by these things, but good luck convincing the publishers.
>>342694832
>I wish I could fucking sterilize you.
True gamers understand that this is a measured and appropriate reaction
I thought Rebel Galaxy had the best space combat of all time.
>>342687647
Yes. First one was great, too.
>>342687647
Free Space 2 is literaly perfection and the magnum opus of the genre.
All those apes who love Freelancer and shit are braindead idiots who want War Thunder in space.
>Is this the best space combat game of all time?
Sadly enough, yes, the best space combat game of all time came out fifteen fucking years ago.
The Wing Commander Saga standalone mod for it was pretty dope too.
>>342699483
>Rebel Galaxy
>best space combat
>2D
I'll admit it's pretty fun though.
>>342696004
>tfw FS1 is explained in the beginning of FS2
>play FS2 first
>I wanna try FS1 now
>know exactly what will happen
>LOL IM NOT BOTHER PLAY XDDD
