What type of cyberpunk music does /v/ think is the best.
As far as I can tell there's three categories:
Ghost In The Shell 1995 Kenji Kawai / Ed Harrison Neotokyo OST
Blade Runner Synthetic Blues and Jazz
Modern Synthwave EDM
The edm can be good, and Blade Runner Blues is fantastic, but nothing compares too those Oshii movies IMO. Neotokyo's OST has enough dissonance to it for it to work without it sounding like its made with a gameboy.

This is a videogames board, so obviously cyberpunk, because there are good examples of cyberpunk fiction in videogames.
99% of steampunk games aren't steampunk at all, they're fantasy with top hats and gears. The closest to a proper steampunk game I've ever played was Amnesia AMFP, and even that degenerates into fantasy magic by the end. Videogames treat steampunk as an aesthetic, not a legitimate subgenre.
I think reddit's infatuation with steampunk and 4chan's preference for cyberpunk might harken down to how the userbases see themselves and the characters they identify with.
A steampunk protagonist is traditionally a gentleman adventurer, a tinkerer, or a quick-witted rogue, something I imagine most of reddit sees themselves as.
In comparison, traditional cyberpunk protagonists are, to quote the oft repeated, "marginalized, alienated loners who lived on the edge of society", and even when they aren't, the characters are often doomed anyway due to noir's influence on the genre. I'd say that accurately describes 4chan's userbase.

Would Steampunk be good if it focused on the actual punk, as in the class struggle of the newly aware urban proletariat against the oppressive upper class in a dystopian past instead of just being a pretext for fedoras to roleplay as enlightened gentlemen of leisure with cogs on their top hats?

Proof please. They can't be THAT tasteless
>>342650283
I imagine it would at least be better than now. As for good, that would depend on the skill of the writer and whether the setting is going to take place in not!London. That's another problem of Steampunk, they build up this entire setting and then stick around mostly in England rather than seeing how the rest of the world develops with the tech.
Hell, you could easily make the setting about the powers of globalism, conquering the environment, class warfare, and trying to weave faith and tech together but nope, throw some gears on it.

The only steampunk work I've seen that I feel is worthy of the word "punk" is BioShock Infinite, and only because the bright, shiny and happy Jules Verne-ian 1890s Disneyland-Main Street, USA society that the flying city of Columbia is presented as is quickly revealed to be a facade rather early on, and the game goes on to show off the inherent social problems that people faced in the late 1800s-early 1900s (e.g. racism, sexism, social immobility, company towns, religious control over government and business, etc.). Anything else trying to ape Jules Verne while stupidly calling itself "punk" can go eat a dick.
>>342650283
If it's written well, it'll be good steampunk (and worthy of using the word "punk"). Otherwise, it will just have to settle for being worthy of "punk" even though it's also a piece of shit.

We're absolutely seeing the early stages now. Economic turmoil, massive wealth disparity, a massive amount of social justice issues and SJWs, hacktivism is in full swing, megacorporations, TPP, fracturing peoples, multiculturalism and ultra-nationalism, extreme lowlife and a myopic populace centered around personal and material gain over "greater good" or long term focus, massive leaps forward in medical technology and genetics, lots of racism and classism and a whole host of -isms, sprawling metropolises and constant new architectural feats building grand new buildings, foreign wars and distant, vague threats of destruction turning into often violent rioting and the breakdown of civil discourse, mad men and women in office doing crazy, stupid, and dangerous shit often to appease their corporate ties, widespread accepted surveillance, the establishment of privacy in the fallout of the NSA, governments going after whistleblowers, etc.
We live in a fully realized cyberpunk reality. We don't have widespread mechanical prosthesis and that likely won't happen due to the recent breakthroughs in stem cell research, but gene splicing and manipulation will undoubtedly be big. Then you also have the smart-AI problem too which isn't too far off. We live right in the middle of a genuine cyberpunk era and it's not going away in our lifetimes. It has every hallmark of the genre in our everyday lives. You actually lived to see it, there just aren't any flying cars or mechanics hanging off our bodies except google glass and smart watches just yet.

And no, a defector doesn't count.
Cyberpunk has all sorts of interesting themes, like transhumanism and all powerful corporations.
Steampunk needs to reinvent itself a bit, right now it's just a dumb aesthetic, occasionally with some obvious criticism about victorian era work conditions.
Why doesn't it explore something like imperialism, what if instead of england or a fictional equivalent, the game is instead in Central Asia focusing on the great game?
What about focusing on a once great, fragmented empire being slowly torn apart by advancced imperialist nations, like happened with imperial China?
