MachineGames, the developers behind Wolfenstein TNO, just released an entire new episode for the original QUAKE to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the series.

Game's actually doing a right proper job of challenging me, this is a feeling I missed from Doom since I've played it so much that I can beat it with my eyes closed by now.

Also loving the atmosphere so far, especially finding random dudes just shambling about the halls of whatever this medieval looking place is. Not a big fan of how the screen gets shaken every time I take a hit, but I suppose that's a problem of me getting hit in the first place.

unzip it into a "dopa" directory inside the main quake folder:

D:/MyGames/Quake/dopa

i use the directQ port, so i run it by creating a desktop shortcut with this location

D:/MyGames/Quake/DirectQ.exe -game dopa

if you don't use any sourceport, it works the same with the regular game exe:

D:/MyGames/Quake/Quake.exe -game dopa

Welp, I got to the second to the last map before quitting out of boredom. It's very challenging but it's completely dull.

Early maps
>grunt and enforcer spam
Mid maps
>death knight and ogre spam

I've been playing on Hard and plenty of encounters feel like they just multiplied the amount of enemies 2x. They don't necessarily make the encounters harder, they just make them drawn out. Maybe the maps were designed around Normal and they only multiplied the enemy count in Hard, I don't know.

Also, there's been a couple of poorly telegraphed instakill traps late into their respective levels so if you don't quicksave you're fucked. Also, lots of rehashed encounters where you're put in a T shaped room and enemies come at you from opposite ends once you reach the intersection. Also, lots of rehashed "hey let's make the player fight ogres in a partially submerged room so he can't see where their grenades bounce" shit.

If you want a good, albeit monotonous challenge, then it's an okay episode. If you want good Quake level design with interesting flow and architecture and varied enemy encounters, look elsewhere. Play the Quake mission packs instead, or play user-made episodes such as Beyond Belief or Terra.
>>
i still prefer q1 to second one but i dont get the amount of shit it gets here.

still a great game and i cant count how many times ive played it back in the diamond monster voodoo days

everything that isn't darkplaces is better than darkplaces.

darkplaces aim is to "improve" quake, it breaks it in every way by trying to do this. it also doesn't have basic stuff like faithful physics.

quake is not doom, you don't need to put 20 of the same monster inside a room to make it challenging.
>>
on quakespam type "game dopa" instead of "-game -dopa" like some previous retard said.

then go on "new game" to start the game as normal, it goes directly into the new episode

from a shortcut or terminal: -game dopa
from quake's console: game dopa

that's all

I can see what that anon is getting at. Quake's enemies have a much higher average health than Doom's, and Ranger's arsenal doesn't have anything as lethal as Doomguy's SSG and BFG. These are not necessarily weaknesses but differences in design. The problem is that the enemy encounters in MachineGames' episode feel more like they're designed for Doom's gameplay rather than Quake's.

>>
>>342632216
Quake was limited to 2-4 enemies on screen at once because of the 3D rendering/hardware limitations in 1996

You can easily play Quake like Doom, it's just as fast and the enemies can be dodged and can be killed just as well as you can do such things in Doom
>>
>>342632421

Regardless of what Quake's limitations were, the game's bestiary and weapons were designed around smaller quantities of enemies. Just because modern source ports allow you to spam enemies in an encounter doesn't mean that it synergizes well with the game's gameplay. The enemy spam in this episode feels like a crutch to make up for how the mappers couldn't make interesting level geometry/architecture to make small enemy encounters challenging, and the enemy spam in this episode doesn't necessarily make the encounters challenging anyway, just drawn out.
