Nobody wanted DaS III in the first place. DaS II should've never happened and the third game should have just BEEN the second game. It's made intentionally to be a direct sequel because even the developers tried they're hardest to sweep the second game under the rug.
Still hoping they do something really new and interesting with the series. Even if it isn't a "Souls" game, it's still a "Souls" game, and a new environment/time period with a few new mechanics will truly freshen things up.

It's pretty obvious they are, or eventually will go this route.
I imagine trick weapons will be a huge theme, like in BB. You'll be able to become very creative with new technology, so seems like a no brainer to me.
What I hope for, if they go this route, is that there will be a focus on cybernetics, special parts you can get from bosses and soul on to unlock new abilities/weapons. Basically same way that Souls work now, but with the emphasis on the more cybernetic you become, the less humanity you have.
Kind of like going hollow DaS III.

Yes, it does. Viability is another thing entirely, but there are more possible builds in any of the DaS games than in BB. They might all suck in PVP in DS3 but they're still there and can still work for PVE.
BB just needed more diversity in general, you get the best armor set very early on in the game and there isn't as much incentive to explore and loot.
