Bully for the PS2, if you're wondering why I'm emulating it and not playing the scholarship edition on PC it's because I was about 30% into the game when I realized there was a PC version. Emulating 5th and 6th gen stuff is completely fine, since I like playing in higher resolutions. Except the N64 because it's the console I played the most as a kid and it emulates like shit.

Most important thing is aspect ratio and scale.
For instance Megaman is 256x240 and your screen is probably 1920x1080. What most people do is stretch that thing fullscreen to look like blurry distorted garbage. What you want is an integer scale. 240 goes into 1080 four times before going over. At a 4x scale it's 960 vertical pixels leaving 120 pixels of black space. 60 pixels at the top and bottom. 896 split in half on the sides, left and right. Shaders are just flavoring.

Do A Link To The Past before Link's Awakening, and don't feel bad if you give up on Zelda II. I played through the first few temples of Zelda II SO many times when I was younger, but I would ALWAYS give up eventually, but I finally beat it last year on the Wii's Virtual Console.
It's a shame you've played Minish Cap so soon, since I think it's the best of the 2D Zeldas, but the others are still great. I'd recommend playing the DS games after Twilight Princess, too, and if possible play the GC or WII U remaster instead of the Wii edition.

My biggest problem with scanlines is just how they fail to capture the actual look. The problem is that with emulating on a computer, you're sitting way closer than you would on the original hardware, so the scanlines are too big and in the way. While actual CRT TV's had scanlines, they were not that fucking noticeable since no one played with their nose to the screen.

The base game is very easy on "hard mode", even if you're doing an ironman run with no grinding you should have no problems. That said, I forgot how dicey emulation can be. Your definitions for "Runs perfectly" have to be slightly more loose.
Even a game like Paper Mario, which I've got to run at 60fps at all times has occasional jitter, and the game will pause for half a second as it loads a new asset for the first time.It's 97% of the way there, but it's certainly not flat "IT JUST RUNS" as the original hardware usually is.

I used to play WW on my old toaster years ago. I'm sure you'd be able to run Dolphin and most games just fine, specially something like paper mario. Other games do take more power to run

Dolphin emulator. There's some check boxes you have to make sure are proper before it will run 100%. The Dolphin Wiki is amazingly thorough for that kind of stuff.

2xSSAA, anything else is either overkill, or breaks the game, and it doesn't look quite right without just a little bit of smoothing, pic related
There are widescreen options, but I find the vast majority of the game's effects and rendering relies on the 4:3 aspect ratio, so it just doesn't look good, unless there's something I'm missing.
