MC and crew find themselves in the matrix, wake up to it and want out. Essentially Mobius is a virtual hospice of some kind where your appearance takes on what you believe to be your ideal self. MC has two choices, take the blue pill and live the rest of his digital life in paradise or take the red pill and fight Mobius and the digital idol that is facilitating the paradise and does nothing but care for the citizens of Mobius. It's worth nothing that they have no idea what situation their real life bodies are in, for all they know they could be on their death beds at 100+ years old.
So basically you are Marche from FFTA, Kill the dream or live it. The student body in mobious views you as the villain as your are essentially killing their beloved world to go back to the shit hole that is reality. Slowly you can win them over with social links and there are over 500 characters that can eventually become playable.

The combat system is actually being praised. It is on the slow side but it's also quite deep, and the lack of mana and health potions combined with topping off your HP/MP every fight makes it so that you actually have to manage your mana during fights.

It's a high school setting because high school settings are so common. It's meant to be something familiar and oversaturated, because that's the world built to keep these Japanese people happy and comfortable.
