Since Microsoft announced Windows 10 can play Xbone games, they've literally indicated their future intent to slowly phase out the Xbone.
And why not? They could shift their Xboners over to the PC and do away with cumbersome hardware considerations and costs, streamlining their gaming operation into software entirely, like Sega. Though I wouldn't mind if Microsoft kept making Gamepads, they've done a generally decent job on those.
But yeah, I think Microsoft is on their way out of hardware. Sony probably is too, but isn't set up with a handy exit strategy like the built-in options Microsoft has.

The Xbox One S seems to be a stall console though, yes it's smaller, yes they finally got rid of the giant external powerbrick, but it's 4K in the system menus and video playback, the games aren't. If the PS4K rumors are to be believed that will actually PLAY games in 4K (although I'm sure it will be upscaled to fuck in reality). It's interesting because I think that waiting for 2017 in Scorpio is probably wiser than a half baked refresh that will divide performance on Xbone games.
Dropping the kinect is kind of a shame, people spoke, they don't want the extra cost of the sensor. For voice commanding TV, system menus, chat, Skype it's actually pretty cool. (My main purpose was for the IR blaster, which is now built into the Xbone S).
I don't really buy the great exclusives though. Rare replay is fun, none of the other exclusives appealed that much to me (except master chief collection because of nostalgia).

It has some privacy related settings that are not optimal, I would run OO Software ShutUp10 and Spybot anti-beacon to disable such settings and block telemetry (auto submitted diagnostic data to microsoft). Otherwise it's a great OS, especially if your computer is UEFI bootable (either self built and installed that way or if you have a prebuilt that shipped with windows 8 or 8.1). Runs great.

Nintendo's lack of dominance first came from arrogance, then their objectives being different. They saw the writing on the wall with cartridges and started working on the console with Sony, then politics/arrogance caused them to split off leaving sony to release the playstation. They then made the N64 64-bit (which didn't matter that much) and they made the cartridges expensive. This cut into retailer profits, game creator profits, greatly increased the lead time to get more copies of a game (tons of factories could make CDs and do it quickly if you had a hit), and made it hard to fit a lot of different assets on one game.
Then you have the Gamecube. Nintendo finally goes optical but boneheadedly decides to pick a small disk format in a move to deter piracy. This means it can't play DVDs, a huge blow. PS2 gets bolstered by a back catalog, Xbox gets bolstered for being new and having out of the box online support.
Then you get the Wii which was a smash hit even though it wasn't as graphically powerful. The gimmick was fun. But by the time the Wii U comes out everyone has moved onto smartphone and tablet gaming that's not seriously into gaming, and if you're seriously into gaming and Nintendo's exclusives are not that attractive to you, the Xbone and PS4 are better fits.
Now Nintendo is in a pickle because

True, Xbox live didn't come at console launch, but it had online capability via ethernet, which the PS2 and Gamecube both lacked. The PS2 Network adapter allowed dial-up players to play (significantly hampering the experience) and the GC had such minimal online support it wasn't worth talking about.
The original Xbox did get criticized for no BC and being a newcomer and the Duke controller being way too fucking big and the console being monstrously big (because they rushed the console to market and threw COTS parts into the smallest case that could contain them) but it had some exclusives and great online support, far better than competitors at the time.
