Paying for online is still unacceptable, the only redeeming quality is that you can get it for 4-5$. The only good free games are now on Xbox Live, PSN has been shit for a while. And ultimately, you play online a lot? If not skip it, it's not worth it.
I subscribe to both Xbox Live Gold and PS+ and while I wish that Sony hadn't followed MS into the paid online setup, it was inevitable and Nintendo will probably do the same thing if they ever offer a service remotely comparable to Xbox Live or PSN.
Currently I pay about $70 a year for both Xbox Live gold and PS+ which sucks but I spent so much on video games that doesn't really matter that much to me.

Yes it's more expensive, but that point your PC ought to last about two to three times that of a console. Meaning that when people hop onto the PS5 and whatever comes after the Scorpio, your PC will still compete. And when those systems are left behind, your PC will still have a use.
