It's not required to play the first game first. there are some references you might miss in the second game but if you like the second game you can always come back and play the first one after. But if you do this it will feel sorta like a downgrade gameplay and graphics wise. So its your choice.

If we're being real probably. The only benefit of playing the first one first is you recognize a few reoccurring characters and if you get the good ending in the first one and load your first game save file while making a new game on Suikoden II you get some bonus content. The first game doesn't compare in quality to the second one though, which is untouchable in quality.

It's gameplay is phenomenal. The turn based combat is pretty much standard, fastest characters go first and there's physical and magical attackers, but there's also 101 characters you can choose from and with the right buffs each and every one of them is usable. The story is also extremely great, and getting the good ending feels worth going through the trouble to get it because it's just so satisfying. Seriously, play it.

The gameplay is pretty much typical from a JRPG from the 90's though the fact you can recruit 108 unique people around the world and use about 90% of them in battle.
You can upgrade your base by recruiting these people too which gets more lively and more things to do as you go along.
There are fun stategy battles in the game too and a really great story to go along with it.
Tons of mini games to do and sidequests it never really gets boring as its filled with quality content.

If you would call yourself a hardcore anime fan before you'd call yourself a hardcore gamer, then this game is absolutely for you. The cinematics and voice acting are pretty impressive for an RPG of this style, and the characters and plot points will be comfortable to those familiar with japanese cartoons in general. If you want shocking twists and turns in your story, or engaging gameplay, this game is definitely not for you. Combat is laughable; I played for 3-4 hours and never once was in a fight that required anything more than auto-attacking... and this is with no items or visits to the inn! The game's menus hint at further depth, but people that don't find themselves engrossed by the clichéd characters will wish they hadn't wasted so much of their time waiting for the "game" to start.

it's like comparing the 80s to the 90s, first game had classic RPGs elements, the 2nd one was more like Final Fantasy 7 and the later PS1 rpgs if that makes sense
Also the story was more on a epic scale, taking out the evil empire one general at a time and converting all their guys to your team, plus the battles were cooler. More imaginative locations. The castle being in the ocean/lake was a cool touch too.

2's second half was kind of retarded. It was cool when you where up against Luca but after that the plot takes a nosedive. People try to say Jowy is this complex tragic figure but he's really just a shit head and there was no reason to fight him beyond LOL DESTINY. Even Han and Genkaku knew when to call it quits.
Plus the good ending was saccharine as fuck and I hated Nanami's revival. I like Nanami but it's idiotic that she would just pretend to be dead when she could have just as easily went back home without putting the hero through that kind of heart ach

Nanami's 'death' made sense, if only because she could see no other way out. Didn't want to abandon her 'brother', but also hated all that murder and fairly senseless killing. No win situation seeing as neither of the fucktards(jowy and MC) would stop until the other was defeated for some reason.
