https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Adams_(sailor)

>William Adams (24 September 1564 – 16 May 1620), known in Japanese as Miura Anjin
>Adams settled there and became the first ever (and one of the very few) Western Samurai.
>Taking a liking to Adams, the shogun appointed him as a diplomatic and trade advisor, bestowing great privileges upon him. Ultimately, Adams became his personal advisor on all things related to Western powers and civilisation

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nioh
>The game follows the story of William (loosely based upon William Adams), a blond-haired English samurai, during Warring States period Japan in 1600.

Here's a fun fact: ninjas are not originally from Japan, they're from Korea, Japan's emperors couldn't have their own men performing assassinations because they were too honorable, so he hired assassins from Korea to assassinate their enemies, eventually these assassins settled on Japan and passed down their knowledge.

FACT

samurai comes from the japanese phrase "shiro nai" meaning "not white" because only black people were allowed to become samurai, but history has forgotten about this due to white men oppressing blacks.

It actually started with a war over how to pronounce Kyushu. One group said it KEE you Shoe. The other group said Kyushu as we know it know.

Well after a long and bloody war the second group one. And not only did they ban the other pronunciation, but they went on the ban all 3 syllable words.

For those worried about a difficulty downgrade I have good news for you. This was just wrote by gamespot yesterday

http://www.gamespot.com/articles/nioh-dev-isnt-compromising-on-games-dark-souls-dif/1100-6441064/

Nioh Dev Isn't Compromising on Game's "Dark Souls Difficulty"

>"It wouldn't add anything to the gameplay to make enemies weaker or the player stronger," creative director Tom Lee told GameSpot during a recent demo at E3 2016. "Any changes would be to enhance the difficulty. Some people said the difficulty was too high, but the vast majority had positive feedback. We are introducing abilities that will give the player more options, though. We want learning them to feel rewarding."

I'll have you know I beat all the souls games making me a master of video games and I died 35 times to the first npc so the game is broken and too hard.
>>
>>342313184
They had people submit survey's of their thoughts on Nioh's demo, American's were a majority satisfied but Asians were nearly half and half loving/hating it
My only problem was blocking with an empty bar made you wide open to attack but running away regained stamina, which didn't make sense, I'd be more fine with being bitchslapped for blocking with low stamina and getting hit hard into a stun state
>>

>"Any changes would be to enhance the difficulty."
But the biggest changes are the change to the lock on system which makes it easier to circle strafe without exposing your back, letting you adjust your position without even thinking about it, and durability being removed so you don't have to think about fighting efficiently. Then there's them shortening the Ki stagger time, you can't paint that in any way other than it being easier.
>>342314154
You would only be made open if you blocked an attack you didn't have enough Ki to block, so your guard would be broken. Simple movement on the other hand doesn't take much but you not defending so you need to move so that you're not exposed. I don't see the problem, except for them changing it so you don't turn around if you run away.

The game gave a link to the survey in at least the online manual accessible from the main menu, but it might have said it in other places. Every Nioh thread during Alpha had the link too and it could probably be found just by Google.
We're all gonna need to be prepared for the Beta survey, since we know now the lengths they'll go to to change the game based on feedback.
>>
If you didn't get your mark or if you missed it during alpha. You can get another attempt to at it in the open beta in two months.
>>
List of changes since the alpha demo compiled by people here for anyone who hasn't been following the updates the past week

>The life and stamina bars of both William and enemies are now brighter and more colourful, as is the spirit guardian gauge
>Quick-item slots have been made bigger on the HUD, and have been expanded to encompass the entire D-Pad; also it seems that two sets of items can be mapped to the D-Pad and swapped on the fly
>Quick weapon switching is now done with R1 + the D-Pad, with the weapon icons subsequently being moved over to the stance indicator
>A second missile weapon can now be equipped
>When using a talisman to imbue your weapon with elemental damage, a display on the stance indicator will show how long your buff is active for
>The lock-on system has been changed to work more similarly to Zelda or Souls
>William's breathers after running out of stamina seem to have been shortened by half
>Dodges and rolls now seem to have more weight to them and seem less glide-y than they were in the alpha
>Durability has been removed outright
>On-screen messages display whenever a proficiency point is earned for the equipped weapon, with a little display at the bottom of the screen showing how many you currently have
>Drop rate seems to have been toned down a bit, so every enemy isn't a piñata of useless gear
>>
>>342316337And new information that a few anons have gleamed from press interviews that Yasuda and Hayashi have been giving the past week

>The game is currently 60-70% completed, but Team Ninja are still aiming to get it out by late 2016
>They're aiming to clock the main story of the game at around 30-40 hours
>William is the only playable character
>William only understands very basic Japanese, so the dub will more than likely be bilingual
>None of Kurosawa's Oni script (That was subsequently finished by his son and tightened up by Kou Shibusawa to make it more videogame-y) that the game was originally based on has made it into the final version, with the exception of the protagonist still being a blond samurai
>It was reaffirmed as a PS4 exclusive for the foreseeable future, but chances of a port didn't sound too good, as TN are still very snakey about that DoA5 nude mod thing
>None of the prevalent sexuality from DoA and Ninja Gaiden will be there, since they felt it didn't match the tone of the game
>Around 100 side missions of varying objectives will be avaliable
>NG+ isn't a given, but they're aware of the demand for it
>No invasions, but a potential PvP arena
>The August beta demo consists of a tutorial dojo, the two levels from the alpha demo again and a new stage, the boss of which is a Hinoenma, that creepy demon lady from the TGS and E3 trailers
>Completing all three stages of the beta will allow players to get the Mark of the Conquerer if they missed it the first time, so the copypasta may have to be rewritten a bit
>You will be more than likely to be able to change the facial appearance of your revenant
>Firearms are extremely powerful, but will cause all nearby enemies to investigate the source of the sound
>Healing hotsprings will be dotted around some stages

All collected footage of the new level and the training dojo

With durability:
Different weapon and armour types get another layer of variety and uniqueness, potentially impacting how you play
More encouragement to use different equipment and experiment, feels satisfying when you're caught short but able to win regardless
Potentially more depth to enemy encounters by having them use it against you (hit the weakspot or your weapons break quicker, yokai that aim for the equipment rather than your health)
More encouragement towards fighting efficiently, instead of just simply blocking everything regardless of build since there's no downside
Fits both thematically and mechanically, what with the darker atmosphere, emphasis on authentic feeling samurai combat, and the loot system meaning you'll at least have something to fall back on making it seem somewhat balanced if not a bit lenient, at least in the confines of the demo
Rewards preparation before battle that little bit more
Brings a fair punishment to dying multiple times and being unprepared

Without durability:
No pressure to change your equipment at any time or even bring anything more than one weapon unless you just want to
Don't need to take a moment to stop and repair equipment (which took what, 5 seconds tops if you didn't have them on a shortcut)
One less bar to keep track of to be able to fight at your strongest
Getting and keeping the items isn't necessary (though they weren't all that hard to get anyway)
I can't think of anything else.

If anyone wants to add to it, feel free. I could do the same for the lock on thing but it'd be shorter and I think everyone gets why the old lock on was better anyway.

Jesus christ this looks awful. Didn't this have a huge budget? It looks like a generic low budget weebshit action JRPG but in a slightly more interesting than usual background which it completely fails to deliver on anyway.

The setting and enemies are so unbelievably fucking boring and bland for what we were promised. The shitty animations aren't doing the combat any justice, either. I downloaded the demo and I didn't think it was anything special even then despite what /v/ said but it made me hopeful that the final release would be overall better in terms of level and enemy design. The combat looks exactly the same and just as boring, I can't tell if it was because they simply didn't show anything cool/new or whatever but it was severly lacking in variety. This looks like a step back, if anything. If the lighting was slightly worse this shit could VERY easily pass as a last gen title whenever you're indoors, it looks pretty hideous overall as it is.

Games like Souls that put the combat before everything else rely on solid level and enemy design in order to succeed. This just looks like you're running through lifeless and dull looking linear maps and interacting with random shit for no reason at all while fighting the occasional slow, hunkering enemy. Literally how the fuck do you mess up a fantasy/folklore-centric Japan setting? That boss fight at the end was so laughably bad holy shit. I wish they went for a Ninja Gaiden fast paced and action oriented approach instead because this shit looks slower AND easier than Souls while having significantly worse designs in literally every single department.

Of course this means literally nothing because I'm sure most of you stupid weebs will eat anything Japan shits out regardless.

I bet he went further than he was supposed to for the video. If you make the slow but strong and bulky guys weak and quick to cut down, then all they have left is being slow.

hopefully the e3 build has you overpowered because that looks staggeringly easier than the alpha demo they released.

Very important to remember that challenging games usually don't demo well because the take a while to learn, and any feedback the devs get regarding difficulty needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

After the hole DaS3 left in my heart with how easy it was I need Ni-Oh to offer something challenging, like Ninja Gaiden did for me 12 years ago.
>>
>>342326408
The bad guy is probably someone from Irish mythology.

William is British, as is the villain.
Mythological creatures are real in their world.
The villain is openly disdainful about their location (strongly implying he's not from there), and is surprised that William has followed him that far.

Last note: The female voice speaking in the trailer is speaking Gaelic, and appears to be some sort of mytholgical creature keeping William from dying permanently.

Don't be too alarmed by the damage in the demo. I remember that specific armor set, and it's one of the heavy sets.

On top of that, look at how much Amrita he needs to level up. He's REALLY overleveled.

And despite that, he still goes down in 3-4 hits, or 1-2 if counter hit (like when the stone Samurai nicks him during an attack) or from behind.

Yeah and in the video he's not even using a special looking katana and tearing them apart in about 4 mid stance hits. I just used Raikiri as an example of a high end katana but they're totally weaker in the video than they were in the demo, the damage penalty isn't there anymore.

I missed playing the Alpha demo because of fucking DaS3 but I'm going to make sure I play the one in August.

I'm kind of disheartened that they're getting rid of the durability mechanic, from what I had seen the idea was that you'd have 4 or 5 weapons equipped at once, like how pirates would have multiple old flintlock pistols holstered, to use and discard and you'd need to eat through your arsenal and pick up new swords, like an OSP survival mechanic.

The way they're taking on player feedback is pretty great but for games like this, Souls, or Ninja Gaiden, I'm not sure it's constructive, players will always bleat and moan that it's too hard until they ''get it''. And the devs need to be careful that they don't nerf their vision out of concern for this early impression that players get.

>>
>>342328064
The Siliconera interview is REALLY informative. They've got a very clear vision of what type of game they want to make, so while they're willing to take feedback they won't compromise their design goals for the game.

Durability was hugely flawed in the alpha. Even trading in everything at the shrines, Whetstones and Nikawa Glue were far too scarce. Equipment had very low durability stats, and shit breaking in a goddamn boss battle is just unacceptable.

Couple that with the fact you technically only had 2 shortcut slots (1 item was dedicated to each directional pad direction, but the healing item and weapon swapping took two of them) and repairing items meant digging through cumbersome menus for the item.

In the middle of a battle where getting struck in the back or side brings with it huge damage multipliers.
>>
>>342328341
Yeah, familiarity was listed in the demo, but not implemented yet. It's how we know about the fact there was gonna be a blacksmith in the final version before they took out durability altogether; he got a mention in the help section for familiarity.

Also again, I got to that same level in the demo myself and had a lot of high level equipment. Actually now that I think about it we do see his stats when he goes to the level up screen, so we could compare from that.

>>342327894
That was in the original demo but it didn't do anything yet. It mentioned how it would give you a spirit when disassembling the weapon or something but I don't really believe that they only added the increase in damage in response to removing durability. That seems like something they would have thought of and planned out already. It doesn't sound like it'd work as well without durability either honestly, since it gives even less reason to have another weapon to swap to. But I also can't imagine it giving such a huge damage increase that you can cut down the tankiest non-boss enemies in 4 hits with a more generic katana, if an attack boost really is what it does now.

You're totally overrating how fast durability actually decreased overall as well as how hard to find items were. Sure, they didn't show up as often in the first level, but since you're at the beginning you find multiple weapons on par with the one you have at that point and can just trade out and work your way through them. This means you don't have to use the items you do get when offering the broken ones.

In the second level, stones and glue were a bit more plentiful, with some spots dedicated to getting more, and you were starting to get weapons you could actually rely on so more could be offered. And hell, maybe it's just me but I'd love to have a boss fight my sword breaks on, but it didn't happen to me at all. You can equip at least two weapons though, and katanas are the least durable of weapons while axes have twice as much.

I didn't find the menus hard to navigate either. Just sort the items and then whetstones and glue are the first option. I think it also remembers what item you're on last as well so using them only took me about 2 seconds at most. They added more item shortcuts anyway and there are plans to add a shop too so really it would have needed to be made rougher in the long run, but it was pretty good how it was in the confines of the demo.
>>
>>342329371
You're going into tinfoil hat territory. Considering how all the changes in the beta have been overwhelmingly praised by folks who got to play the damn thing, I'll side with them on this.

The alpha's execution of durability was some of the worst I'd ever seen.
>>
>>342330269
You're making this too personal.

The durability was a mistake. The problem was echoed across all 850,000 folks who played the game. Team Ninja considered it to be egregious enough to purge from the game and replace with a system that benefits players who master one-type of weapon as opposed to playing the game as if it's Diablo.

He's not really overstating anything. One thing that got ALL my friends to agree on about the alpha was the durability shit.

ALL of us had our fucking weapon break against Onryoki and Nue, despite having repaired them in the nearby shrine.

The only acceptable solution to keep durability in, IMO, would be to septuple the fucking equipment durability.

Item degradation almost never adds anything to games beyond tedium. They are exceedingly difficult to execute well. If equipment degrades too slowly (DS3), it might as well be off entirely. If it degrades too quickly, it's a fucking chore and leads to desperately trying to fix things.

This is the best time to have Nioh threads though, gotta know for sure what we'd like in the game so when we play it we can give proper feedback on the surveys.

You're not wrong, I can't think of any games that do it well in a way that adds tension to a game instead of annoyance, but I like the IDEA of it.

Certainly looks better than the alpha, though I'm not too crazy about the level design and the animations.

You'd think there would be more Souls-inspired games considering how popular they are.
>>

Oh, the idea of item degradation is awesome. Locked in the heat of battle you're duking it out with your opponent. You're in a methodical battle looking for openings, parrying, etc...
And during all this is the pressure of your gear slowly falling apart as extra incentive to end this engagement quickly.

However, in practice, it never works that way.

>The durability was a mistake.
The lack of a shop to buy glue and whetstones was a mistake. Removing an entire game mechanic was a mistake. Equipment having durability was NOT a mistake.
>>
>>342331696
Why would want more micromanaging in an ACTION game?
>>
>>342331696
Equipment durability is a mistake. Removing a faulty, unfun mechanic from a game is a net good.

See anon's post here: >>342330794

>>342331696
Durability never adds anything to the game other than artificially decreasing your resources.

If you'd stop prepping your wife's son you might notice the game is itself made by the Japanese.
>>
>>342330473
Not really, I mean if it supposedly made his weapon that strong then you would never need to swap weapon until like 4 levels in, and then what's the point of having a random drop system? Beta's technically not out yet either, it's only really been played at E3 by >game journalists
>>342330594
Team Ninja took it out because of people complaining about it, that's all. Similar to them making the Ki stagger shorter because people complained about it when they hadn't mastered Ki Pulse, or when they complained about being hit in the back while locked on because they ran instead of walked.
Each weapon within the class was wielded the same as well, so that doesn't benefit people using one type so much as it benefits using one weapon alone. With all this encouragement towards using only a single weapon, it just makes the random loot system pointless. Do you want that removed too? A durability system you can actually feel the effects of for once is not a bad system.
>>
>>342331696
So in order to keep weapon/armor health around, you have to have a shopkeeper, mandating a player go through the busywork of buying repair items in order to engage in the busywork of equipment maintenance.
Fuck that.
>>
>>342331804
Because you stop to rest at shrines before pushing forward in a level, which is a very good point to take a look at your stats before leveling, and to check your gear and top off on items you need.

>>342331846
You're not wrong anon, but the game had currency(gold) which was never once used in the demo, and I'd like it to have an actual use in the final product even if it's just to waste on shit like glue and stones.
Also katanas are shit swords and I liked the idea of needing to keep it sharp.
>>
>>342332059
Gold was used for the Kodama buffs, but yeah, you were earning waaaayyyyy too much to have it restricted just to that.
>>
>>342332059
But you're gonna stop at a shrine regardless since they act as your checkpoints. Look at diablo. The durability in that game did nothing but waste your time. It didnt force you to change weapons consistently. The improved stats of loot was the one that did

>>342330794
>ALL of us had our fucking weapon break against Onryoki and Nue, despite having repaired them in the nearby shrine.
Were you all using katanas and blocking everything? Katanas are not a defensive weapon in part because of the low durability they have. Keep in mind as well that you can equip two weapons at once and whetstones repair both equipped weapons on use. Is it really a bad thing that it's possible for your weapon to break during the boss fight? It just means there's another threat you have to deal with, another bar you need to heal if necessary between fights. That isn't a chore, it's a mechanic that livens up combat and makes you fight efficiently.

>Team Ninja took it out because of people complaining about it, that's all.
Because it doesn't conflict with their design goals for the game. It's just item durability, it means fuck all in the grand scheme of things. The entire point of the Alpha was user feedback.

>Similar to them making the Ki stagger shorter because people complained about it when they hadn't mastered Ki Pulse.
Nioh's one of the few games EVER that utterly robs you of mobility when out of stamina. Usually that's relegated to RPGs who function on action points. Ki system was poorly explained in the Alpha, which explains people's intense desire to see the stagger replaced/reduced.

>or when they complained about being hit in the back while locked on because they ran instead of walked.
Because the natural thing to do when in danger is to run. The camera's old behavior while locked was bizarre. The game heavily penalizes being counterhit or being struck in the back, but allows you to show your back essentially rewarding you with death for attempting to evade an attack. Which is the case for the overwhelming majority of games.

The new lock-on movement behavior is more along the lines of what you'd expect. Instead of turning the fuck around, he simply backs up quickly. It was strange that in order to back up in the Alpha you had to do a damn dodge rather than hold away from the target.
>>
>>342331696
honestly, there was so much candy dropping from the fucking pinata enemies in the demo that an "obligatory" item type like glue needed to be cut just to reduce the loot burden
>>
>>342331804
Why would you want more stats in an RPG? This is an Action RPG that wants to reward "methodical or strategic" play, after all.
>>
>>342332414
>Ki system was poorly explained in the Alpha, which explains people's intense desire to see the stagger replaced/reduced.
imo the long stagger led to bizarre and undesirable scenarios, like it being better to run away to regen stamina vs. large oni

hopefully the stamina stagger is also reduced for enemy humanoids because i thought baiting attacks until they fell over was a little too easy
>>
>>342332413
Chores do not liven up anything.
They're a weight on the ankle of possibility.

I primarily used spears and axes and ran into the same problem as when using katanas. There was little to no difference in durability between the weapon types.

You speak of fighting efficiently, but even engaging in Ki Pulse heavy barrages that let me deal with 3 Yokai at once with least almost always left my weapons in danger.

And against bosses your durability dropped like a rock no matter what you did.

That's not even getting into armor degradation and how that affected the overall dynamic of the game. In a title where even incidental damage had you repairing your armor every two seconds, where getting hit meant losing a quarter to half your health, that's fucking ridiculous.
