Front Mission 3 is my least favourite of the five mainline games. The gameplay mechanics were kind of bad (not team focused since rofup kills everything, high randomness with random ejections, small party size), level design wasn't great (most maps played out the same though that's partly because of the mechanics), story was interesting but storytelling was bad due to terrible characters (Kazuki is fucking retarded).

Despite that, it is my favourite series. FM5 was a good ending but I still want more games with similar setting and gameplay.

>>342281540
>Sell me on this series. What made it great?

Note that these features vary a bit by game, but this is why I enjoy the series:

The combat places a lot of importance on positioning and planning, yet it is still fairly fast paced. Battles also frequently have objectives other than "kill all enemies," and your performance and choices in battle may impact the plot.

You can recruit a good number of characters, and they are usually well fleshed out. There are mechanics for interacting with your party members, which basically allows you to decide how much screentime they get. Characters are also fairly customizable, your choice of skills and equipment can change a character's role significantly.

The better games in the series have some major plot branches. Your choices have an impact, either in the course of the overall plot, developing the protagonist's personality, or altering how your allies view the protagonist. Note that these are not minor plot shifts: they include things like joining the villain's side or trying to conquer the world.
>>
>>342277878

Did they even bother playtesting this shit? The turn limit was absurd and the difficulty forced you to use cheese tactics to get anywhere.

>>
>>342283481

I'd say the best part is the gameplay. Most battles have some additional objectives beyond just wiping out the enemy and you have to change your strategy accordingly. The storylines and charactes were also pretty good for JRPGs.

I just wish the games were a bit more challenging.

>>
>>342285642

Which of the growlansers is the best to start off with?
>>
>>342285257
Start with 4, it's fantastic and is a stand-alone game. There's an undub if you want voices.

Growlanser 1 is okay, but it has some annoying old JRPG roadblocks and the combat isn't very good (lots of autobattle).

Growlanser 2 is excellent in both story and gameplay, but it's a direct sequel to Growlanser 1.

Growlanser 3 is only loosely connected to 1 and 2 so it can be played in any order, but it's weaker in terms of story and has shitty randomly generated dungeons, so I'd recommend playing with save states or something to help avoid battles. Gameplay is still pretty good.

I didn't like Growlanser 5's gameplay, but it's been a long time since I played it. Maybe I should give it another shot. Did any of you guys like it?

Growlanser 6 is a sequel to Growlanser 5 so I haven't played it.
>>
>>342285257
In my opinion, 1, 2, and 4 are the best games in the series. Unfortunately, 1 was never localized.

2 and 4 aren't related to each other plotwise, so either of them would be fine to start with.

Growlanser 3 is still better than most RPGs out there, but it suffers from extremely low difficulty, smaller battles, less variety in objectives, and fewer real consequences to your choices/actions.
>>
>>342284786
>>342285494
All games are in the same world but the characters and stories are game specific.

FM1 its mechanics are a little bare bones compared to later entries.
FM2 never played it.
FM3 is a good starting game. It lacks some later mechanics but has some unique ones and its battle scale is smaller but everything else is great.
FM4 is good all around except that the story can be a little bland.
FM5 should be played last because it wraps up all loose ends from the other games. One of the finest srpg games ever.

Is that the battle where there are a million mages and archers on the other side that bombard you while you get rushed by heavy infantry? It's been a while. I recall that being one of the tougher battles, though, because the enemy can output a staggering amount of damage in a short time frame if you aren't careful.

Yeah, and the requirements on a few of them are pretty rough. It's a good challenge.

I do like that there is actual plot recognition for being an unstoppable super-soldier who completely turns the tides in every single battle.

You need to get a "mission complete" on the first ~10 missions to get the option to pick a different route where you side with Wolfgang. I guess a few early missions were kind of tricky, you're right, but later on it becomes way too easy.

It could have ended on a high note, but no.

Really, though, as someone who has played almost all of the games in the franchise. None of the main numbered games really suck. 4 might have issues, mostly with the disconnected stories running parallel (which isn't anything new, other games have done it before) and the link system being a bit flawed, but it was still a pretty good game.

Evolved, while terrible overall, was an interesting attempt at reviving the series. It didn't really fail becuase it was action oriented (gunhazard was fun IMO), but rather becuase of the action was simplified and added terrible on foot section. The story wasn't that great either.

Of course, it's just a spin off, like alternative, gun hazard, online, mobile games, and what have you, so it doesn't count perhaps.
>>
>>342280748

Funnily I just started 5 only yesterday.

WHY DO BATTLES TAKE SO LONG, WHY DOES EVERYTHING DO SO LITTLE DAMAGE?

Seriously, shouldn't having a repair backpack be an excuse to jack up the damage to crazy levels so that you can't even heal in time? You can tank basically anything in this game as long as you're careful.

Also I would win the arena every time if they just let me control it.

Second Hand is just as bad as piracy from the developer's point of view, either way they don't see a cent. I can understand arguing for people to buy it on PSN but supporting the second hand market is usually just harmful.

It's especially pointless when the game is in nip and was never released here to begin with when the pirated version comes with a translation patch. The pirated copy often provides an objectively superior experience than hunting down a real second hand physical copy of a non-english import game.
