Played this game for a bit, quite fun. The only issue I had with it, is that there were too many aggressive creatures in the game.

The game would work much better if you were lulled into a false sense of security as you were looking for resources, with hostile creature attacks more rare and sudden/unexpected. I spend a lot of time juking around sandsharks as I scan fragments since they're everywhere.
>>
>>342265839
This is my complaint, too. The sandsharks and bonesharks especially are way too numerous in certain areas, though that does reflect real life. But one you get the stasis rifle or repulsion gun you can deal with them more easily.

Out in the middle of an unexplored nowhere with no sign of civilization or direction to go in any direction around you. You're completely isolated. There are millions of living organisms beneath you but you can't see anything and you don't know how many of them are hostile.

How are you NOT scared of the ocean. We're not talking just playing in the shallow tide at the beach, which even that can be scary with whirlpools, huge waves and lately sharks coming closer inland.

We're talking Sortie en Mer ocean terror.

>>
>>342267095
wouldn't say close, this seems like one of those games to do that is being constantly developed, like early minecraft and Ark, performance isn't great but supposedly they're removing the terraforming in the net patch as the game checks each section for terrain modification as it loads, so it kind of chuggers quite regularly if you're moving quick.

Gameplay wise it's pretty fun, they're constantly adding new gadgets and such and the game drip feeds just enough information for you to get in but you never feel like you're being guided anywhere... Unless you get a beacon that guides you somewhere on the map.

How the FUCK do you sustain/explore if you have a base at 400m?

I built my first base at shallows and slowly built a second base at some 400m point. Exploring is ALWAYS cut short by oxygen loss though. I barely get 3 minutes to walk aruound before I have to start walking back to my base for air The fuck do I have to do to be able to breath and explore? I have like 5 high capacity oxygen tanks and the ultra fins and it still isn't enough to just go out and do whatever. It's gotten to the point where I just explore until I drown then on the next trip I pick stuff up and walk back to save my inventory.

You're trying to tell me you dive 400 meters deep regularly enough to build a base here with only your slow as fuck fans and never, ever thought about building a sub?

Fragments aren't deep, check by the red plateaux or the kelp forests, I think I recall a few of them here. In general if you find a fragment in a biome you'll find the rest nearby or at similar depth.

While you're at it go take a look around for the Moonpool and the Thermal Reactor. In general whenever you see a peice of tech you don't already own scan that shit.

Allright I got my knife. radiation suit, flippers, some food and two oxygyen tanks (one in my inventory and one on the actual character). Now what the fuck do I do? Exploring is difficult because I keep running out of air.
>>
>>342269140
build the rebreather helmet, makes your oxygen last longer
>>
>>342259874

The trick is to build a sea base so large it takes up the entire ocean. Then there's no room for anything big and scary to live in it.
>>
>>342270563
Upgrade your air tanks, then you'll have around 135 seconds of air.
Make a rebreather helmet, but you'll have to wait until you fix the Aurora's engines and the radiation goes away to use it.
Build a Seaglide for faster long-range movement.
Build a Seamoth.
Build a Cyclops.

They're going to implement a mechanic where you base can come under attack by various creatures, especially if you've built a large base or a base close to where they dwell. At the same time they'll be putting in a base defense system you'll need to find and build and maintain.
>>

you dont have to, just do not swim close to the aurora, and you never will need the radiation suit. it was actually one of the last things ive built

Find the parts to the Modification Station, it will let you upgrade your tanks, fins, and knife.

Fins: Go Faster version and Recharge Equipment version

Best bet is to build a smaller base 100m or so down as you collect fragments for the other stuff. Seaglide then Seamoth are the best two first builds, the extra speed and range of exploration they grant you are worth it over saving up for the big submarine right off the bat.

>>
>>342272052

SOMA was closer to Pressure in theme and tone than Subnautica. But I do feel like if someone modded Subnautica they could make pressure. It already has the modular habitat pieces needed to make randomized levels, and a flooding mechanic.
>>
Why is Subnautica one of the only good survival games out there?
>>
>>342271841
You'll have to build a base since you can't really put anything into the escape pod, but it doesn't need to be big. You'll need solar panels for some power and a fabricator and enough room for a few things like lockers and the mod station. Fortunately a lot of the pieces you need to scan are in the Safe Shallows and Kelp Forest so it shouldn't be hard to find them.
>>
>>342272039
Each air tank in your inventory slows your movement speed a little bit. Lighter air tanks don't decrease your movement speed as much.

i never realized this since when you start without tanks, and when you finaly have them, you also have fins, which kinda negates the speed you loose . and then you upgrade to ultra glides, and hi cap tanks... i dont really see the point of the light tanks. they should also reduce the inventory slots they need

The game is terrifying at first, but here's some things to think about;

You're safe in that starting zone. The "Safe Shallows", the HUGE sea critters never spawn there. Worst you have to worry about is drowning and crashes, the exploding assholes. They respond to movement, so if you hear gurgling, stop moving.

Of the "big scary" variety, there's only one in the game right now, the Reaper Leviathan, and they only spawn around the ship, particularly the engines in the back, and in the dunes area, which is a dead sandy biome. Not the one with the red grass, that's the grassy plains. You'll know when they're around, they like to roar pretty much constantly. They're not at all sneaky.

Most of the small carnivores are pretty easy to avoid. Get a seamoth and they're a nonissue unless you're scavenging for materials around them.

Oh and if you're on the surface of the water, don't look down. Looking down and seeing pretty much nothing but dark is the scariest part of the whole game for me.
>>
>>342272501
Tanks don't need inventory slots anymore, they're equiped like the suit.

Being a saturation diver for the oil and gas industry is what will let you be out in the open ocean the most often. It also pays very well but you have to stop after 5-10 years or health problems begin to accumulate. After that you have to choose something else to do with your life but you'll have a shitload of money to do that with if you saved it up and didn't live outside your means while diving.

Install two water purifiers for infinite water and salt
Build a tank in your base and fill it with the same specie of tiny fish, they'll reproduce and you'll have an endless supply.

You can also grow fruit from seed you get in the island but they're not as nourishing as a cooked fish + purified water and takes up more space, but it's good to have a few tree in the cyclops and the base.

Yeah the "auto save" just secures your inventory, doesn't actually save.

It's still in development though so you can pretty much expect big updates to break saves, if that ruins it for you then you should probably wait for the full release.

>>342274007
Like I said they know about the demand since people ask all the time but their stance is to prioritize getting a completed game experience/story out first.
My guess is they'll add it as an expansion/update as long as the game doesn't bomb.

Yeah, we CAN adapt to really exotic conditions but there is a high price to be paid eventually. That's why the trend these days is towards mini subs and diving exoskeletons that keep pressure out instead of adapting you to it. Pic related.

I hate to say it but probably before these enter widespread use, humanoid ROVs will be good enough that we stop sending human divers altogether.

Subnautica is pretty much the only game for past decade or so that legitimately gave me chills and made me force-quit the game once.

Built a base at around 200ft depth near where you start and everything was fine until I learned that just a few yards away there's a continental shelf with such a sheer steepness that I cannot look towards the dark abyss because of how fuck-huge and steep the drop-off is.
Sends fucking chills down my spine.

Pic related, but replace that crappy slope in the picture with a 90 degree angle slope and you pretty much can picture what I have to deal everytime I play the game.

There's a lot of things to collect, build, and upgrade, and many places to explore. You'll also be able to screw around with the DNA of many of the creatures and inject DNA into either other creatures to change their behavoir or into yourself to get permanent(?) buffs like withstanding pressure, more efficient oxygen consumption, faster swimming, etc. It's also set up so that you'll need to find and build better equipment to go deeper and deeper or into more hazardous areas, so you can't just swim down to 2000 meters right at the start.
