I tried watching that anime when I was younger. It was a piece of over pretentious bullshit. You can have a deep story, without being a gigantic autist like this, Donny Darko, requiem for a dream. I'm playing it right now
I did and althought the user interface is painfully slow I loved it. I identified quite a bit with this Lain's fears and insecurities so I rapidly got emotionally invested in the game. By the end of the game I was on the edge of my seat.I'm kind of obsessed with Lain since I played it.

I'm not going to lie, as a game it doesn't have that much to offer. It's a database with audio files with different sources (lain's diary, psyquiatrist's diary, counseling sessions and some others) and some videos. There are some other things, like keys that unlock new files, but they are just a bunch of entries in the database.
As an unlabeled piece of media it's amazing. The atmosphere and the sense of mistery that its format creates is great and the story is both intriguing and emotive and the two main characters (Lain and the psychiatrist) are deep characters that you slowly get to know as a main part of the narrative.
Basically: not really a good as a game since it lacks gameplay but a great piece of narrative media.
