It's wrong to assume any female, nonwhite, or gay character is there for "diversity" reasons (unless it's EA) Especially since it makes more business sense to make your MC "marketable" or straight/white/male because people who buy and play games are used to playing that anyway. This money/marketability incentive skews games toward the safe white guy when they possibly had someone else in mind before.
ultimately this SHOULD be a small detail in games but annoying twats and memers make a huge deal out of the superficial details when what they should really be criticizing is poorly written, two-dimensional, uninteresting MCs.

It's a Play isn't it? Plays always do this sort of thing though, they change dialogue, introduce new concepts, character development and generally just change things depending on how the director sees fit.
If a black person wants to audition for a specific role, if they pulls off the personality and can act as that character recognizably, then who gives a shit.
This doesn't mean it not a shoehorned decision though, if they advertised for a black person to play that character and disregarded anyone else. This could also happen depending on what type of audience they want to attract, e.g. an asian cast for the play in China or something.
