I think it still exists?
For few years now.
And even without the crutch of text hooker. Honestly it's pretty pathetic if you need to use text hooker for vocabulary. That's barely even reading Japanese.
I started learning a few weeks ago. I just got the Genki textbook and workbook recently. It's really damn good. I'm slowly going through it.

Its not actually very hard. The alphabet and pronunciation is simple and intuitive compared to English. Kanji is somewhat hard but manageable if you diligently practice. /a/ put together a very helpful guide for new learners, you should check it out.

What level of nihongo are you aiming to? if you just want to masturbate, you should be able to read most eroge and porn manga and doujins in a year or so, same goes for the majority of light novels.
For more complex manga, visual novels, games etc at least 2 or 3 years, depending on what do you want to read.

I just want to understand eroge, doujinshi, tv animu and simple manga. LNs are a bonus.

You gotta go in with a better mindset to be able to achieve any of that. Cause once you do, you likely won't even want to stop at some point. Language doesn't work like that especially when you want to mostly do reading.

Obviously I'll still be learning afterwards but I just wanted know how long it takes before you're able to read basic things.

You should be able to read the most basic eroges and moeges between a year if you practice a few hours everyday
