Back then when they still released some albums, they were all great, new stuff filled with crazy techniques.
At that time, their albums were the pinnacle of death metal. It was bold and groundbreaking music.
Now, after 12 years, a lot of other bands have already reached, and some even SURPASSED their levels of technique.
What I'm trying to say is: Maybe they just gave up creating something new due to the enormous hype. They don't want to let down their fans with mediocre content.

Valve only ever made Half Life games to show off their "groundbreaking" engines to investors. Half life 1 was their first ever game, and half life 2 was a Source engine tech demo to show off how great their physics engine and filmmaker and shit is. Gaben and friends wont make a new game unless they could actually push the boundaries of gaming with it. If they made a new half-life now there would be nothing impressive to show off, theres nothing new to improve on or be done.

I don't think the game assumed the player to remember who barney was, it only assumed Gordon to remember since they worked at the same place. If I remember this correcly, I think Gordon only met Barney in the opening tram scene of the game, and even then he wasn't even introduced.

I stopped caring about HL a long time ago. The hype for HL3 built it up to be something more than a mere video game. It's sort of being viewed as Christ the Redeemer. Not through features, not gameplay, not ingenuity, but through the fact that there hasn't been a word about the game, Valve being secretive about it, and the game not being out in a long time.

If half life three came out in this day and age, this is what it would be:
