existing three pretty much cover all ranged options
you'd have to make existing ranged weapons less useful to create a niche for a fourth one

I mean I could see a weapon that is neither ranged nor melee entirely if for example we went with the yo yo design

it does melee damage but you can't hit at point blank range
you have to maintain critical distance at all times because the yo yo is not a bullet and the cord has limited lenght, so if you're even an inch too far you don't do any damage at all
you get too close you get significant damage decrease becasue whatever, yoyo wasn't fast enough before it reaches the end of the cord, or would even cause you to enter cooldown where you have to reel it back in by mashing a because you fucked up

Tonfa, pets, and their Original the Monsters is all they have while the rest of the series moves forward with new mechanics, monster types and weapons.
Other than those they are in a constant state of trying to catch-up while still being stuck in MH2 gameplay.

you pelt common rocks with maybe bow like coatings
BUT
you can also pelt inventory items at both monsters for damage and hunters for heals/buffs
really nimble with faster projectile travel than bow bot slower than any of the bowguns, same with crit distance

Gunners need more weapons.

>Loader Bowgun : Gimmick is a secondary loading feature; you can either double the clip size of the primary ammo by extending it into the second chamber, or pick a second ammo to double load, adding half of its usual clip size to the second chamber, rounded up. For double-loaded shots, you can fire off at any time without having to change primary shots, as long as you're not already in a primary fire animation. You mayn't load any secondary ammo of other levels than the primary ammo if you're loading the shot type; extend the current primary ammo OR choose a different shot altogether.

Its marked shot system is Economy Shots. When firing EcoShots, ANY next shot you fire will be saved. Your clip will drop like normal, but the EcoShot will prevent the shot count in your inventory from decreasing on the next shot. Could be abused for, say, alternating Clust/Crag after, say, Eco N2, if you're lucky to find a gun with an EcoShot that doesn't have high recoil or low carry.

Movement speed halfway between light/heavy, sheaths over the head like heavy but lacks folding, making it sheath and draw faster than heavy.

No power barrel, shield, or silencer; instead:
A) Simulfire Mechanism: Can fire the second chamber off at any point in any animation, even during primary fire. Good for abusing the EcoShot, but if your secondary shot has higher recoil than the primary, then both will suffer from that recoil. Due to the fact that you can't double-load other levels of the primary shot in the second chamber, the potential for abusing double-firing Pierce shots is negated.
B) Charger Mechanism: Adds wind-up dependent on shot type to ANY shots in the second chamber. Extended clips' second half gain a flat 10% power boost but marginally slower fire rate, but double-loaded shots go anywhere from 20% to 50% power boost depending on shot type, with Crag getting the largest boost but also absolutely MASSIVE wind up time.

Flail weapon that's full of aromatics. Swinging the flail crushes the perfumes inside the flail, producing large zones that buff the hunters or debuff the monsters. The aromatics need to be packed into the flail every so often, and can be swapped out for different buffs in combat like an ammo type. The buffs are unique to each flail, similar to the HH songs.

Horizontal swings arc well over the user's head, to minimize tripping.

A chemical flamethrower. Its a huge metal cannon that you tip chemicals into, that launch out in streams of fire or lobbed out in large plasma like blasts.

It wouldnt have to be as slow as greatsword, I think considering it will have lower range than other ranged weapons the movement speed of SA would be good enough, or maybe even a bit faster.

But it should be about unleashing a massive, long, powerful attack that you have to time right. A good player will know when the biggest window to attack will appear and will wait for it, burning the monster in its skin. A bad player will miss time it get hit because they have to 'cap' their cannon to stop it shooting.

Throw in some other effects and uses like being able to apply statuses and elemental cannons and I reckon you get a fun new ranged weapon that fits into the MH aesthetic

Bows. They already shoots spears, about the only thing I can think of that it can't at least vaguely represent would be throwing knives/axes but those would have to be more hybrid melee/range than dedicated range to really make much sense.

Bowguns. New ammo types can account for almost any new projectile behavior without a new weapon class.

The problem is that while there are hundreds of ways to swing a stick at something there are only a few ways to throw a thing at another thing with any meaningful difference in the method.

Maybe a demolitionist class of sorts could work using mortars and setting explosives like mines and mini traps. Would qualify as a ranged class due to true separation between attacker and enemy.

A mobile cannon like the one from Kid Icarus Uprising. A gunner weapon that uses bomb-like cannonballs as ammo, like Normal B, Ice B, Sleep B, etc.

Ammo is loaded one at a time, and then you charge up each shot before firing. Alternatively you can blow it up right in the barrel like a gunlance shell.

It's a quarterstaff with a flail on one side and a spear tip on the other.

The flail side can do light, fast combos that deal high stun damage and have excellent range. The bladed end can only do quick precision jabs with OK damage. Some of the flail combo hits would be bladed hits.

Instead of killing or capturing a monster, you tame it. You learn how it fights and change your moveset in slight ways depending on what type of monster you have tamed. Upgrade trees could work as you worked your way up the variants of said wyvern and how many you tame.

>Yo-Yo Rapier
It starts out as an axe and you have a gauge to fill out. In this form, you have a modified hammer move set with no golf swing, but you end a swing that moves you back. Once the gauge is full, press a button to send the head at the axe head at the monster and it spins in the place where it's stuck for about ten-twelve seconds where it does one attack per second.

The handle now becomes a rapier that's a little longer than the average SnS where you have multiple sidesteps in every direction but back and one button press does two slashes. The axehead comes back automatically, but the attaching animation is slow if you don't call it back yourself. If you call it back at the last possible second, the attaching animation is faster and your gauge fills up to 25%. If you're hit while the axe comes back you, the axehead falls to the ground and your rapier will bounce off the monster until the axe is reattached.

You basically have shitty consistent damage with a little KO in return for powerful Short burst DPS.

Your two arms are half of one shield and you have three phials. You can press R and your arms fold into a shield. Unlike other shielded weapons, you can't hold this block indefinitely, but it lasts for three seconds and successful uses fill up a gauge (one powerful attack will fill up a phial whereas weak ones take a couple blocks). Pressing X after a successful block shoves the shield forward, doing good KO and Exhaust damage and you get to go into a combo. If you press Y after a block, you use up a phial to do an uppercut and you can press Y up to three times to use up the Phials

In games lacking G-rank, it's not uncommon for people to mix high and low rank equipment because the skill/slot difference is minimal.

In games with G-rank, you can still get some good G/HR mixes. Hell, I got a set that gave me Honed Blade plus some extra slots and a free waist/charm/weapon slots pretty much just at the end of High Rank in 4U, and I've been using it for almost the entirety of G-rank, swapping out the waist and charm as needed for bonus skills to reduce the tedium of certain specific monsters, although I typically default to Speed Sharpener + Status+1 and Zamtreacherous Maw, although I can go up to +2 with any 2+ slot weapon.

Japan makes up 80% of MH sales in recent years.
Japan doesn't fucking buy consoles.
Japan doesn't fucking buy console MH on top of not buying consoles, far preferring portable MH for commuting, breaks, and in-person interaction.

Japan is the primary audience, here. Maybe the franchise won't die but the concession made for us alone isn't worth the loss in money and quality that the series will suffer as a result.

Best chance is to get one of the portable MH ported to console, but the graphics would be only marginally different. Maybe increased resolutions, at best.

Actually, no. Best chance is for next MH to come out on the NX, and the NX to either be:

A) A high-powered portable with the ability to stream to a television
or
B) NX Home and NX Portable, with cartridges comparable to if not better than current Wii U discs (which have been pretty much confirmed actually) that can be used interchangeably between them.

Whoops, kinda forgot to mention that the spear is attached to the gun permanently with a tube of some sort and you carry a tank on your back for your venom/fuel. So you basically shoot the spear at the monster and for 10 seconds you are 'attached' to the monster and can spend fuel to run around and inject elemental damage to the hooked limb until the spear comes off and have to reaim.

Why doesn't Capcom just incorporate throwing knives as a full-on weapon for Gunner? Just make throwing animation faster, give them a unique jump or two for throwing in mid-air. Maybe some kind of move where you throw out a bunch of knives at once as a burst move to inflict status. Have a finite amount of Knives, but be able to pick them up during the fight.

I'm just imagining a lot of mobility with this weapon, but maybe not a whole of damage unless Blast or Poison is involved.

1. They aren't in MHO, they are in Frontier
2. Currently their stats blow out most mainline weapons since they can only be made in Frontier G which is it's own special little category, so they would need to be tweaked and touched up on that end.
3. With their speed and mobility in the air figuring out how they would interact with the shitty mechanic of mounting would be interesting to say the least.

They fit the much needed gap of fast impact beautifully though.

tonfa's just look like they'd be pretty shit balance-wise. Constant attacks in the air would equal constant mounting in mainline and the seem to also do impact damage. Coupled with how fast they are KO's look like they'll happen fairly quickly. Also, again with staying in the air, it seems you can vault off monsters repeatedly. this, coupled with a good player seems overkill as you can stay out of the way of many monsters attacks.

Gauntlets are mobility and combos out the ass, deal impact, and are the manliest weapon, since you punch it to death.
