This is a reasonable statement if there is skill progression, some games take some time to find their stride. Dragon's Dogma comes to mind.

Was just about to say DD. Pretty much this.
>>
literally the witcher 1

it's more like 30 hours in it gets good
it's only good during the last two chapters actually
>>
>>342031659
It's never reasonable for a game to get worthwhile so long in. The average person will drop said game within the first hour.
>>
>>342031495
>after 20 hours you'll get used to how shitty it is

People should be more honest with themselves.

Dwarf Fortress

>>342031927
Except it really doesn't. If you still hate the combat after 20hrs you're still going to hate it.
>>
>>342031927
I just finished Chapter 1 and so far it feels like an offline MMO. A good one, but it still just sorta seems like a timesink. Should I just skip to 2?
>>
>>342031659
Personally, I had more fun with the early parts of DD than anything later. That first journey to the woods and exploring the cave in the well were fantastic.

>offline MMO

It's a standard CRPG. Is this your first one or something?
>>
>>342031495
persona 3 and 4
>>

Maybe it's just that the graphics and music remind me of Guild Wars, but it seems like I'm spending way more time running across the same area to turn in fetch quests than I did in other games I've been playing recently like Underrail and Pillars of Eternity.
>>
>>342031927
I honestly couldn't make it. Combat was just too shitty. What a waste of money.

Everyone keeps telling me to play 2 or 3, but I can't get over how terrible the first was.
>>
>>342033712
I finished the first one, and thought it was just barely worth finishing. I dropped the second one hard after seeing that it was typical modern epic cinematic experience bullshit. I've been debating whether or not I should bother with the third. I'll probably pick it up once it's $5 with all the DLC included.
>>
>>342033712
TW2&3 have completely different game mechanics. They're much more modern. I played TW1 mostly for the story and while I certainly don't regret it because it does get pretty good and even fun, I wouldn't be excited to replay it.
>>
>>342033961
Yeah, that's sort of where I'm sitting. I feel like the opinion is pretty unanimous that 3 is good, but I had several friends recommend the first one and it was terrible. I don't even know how it wound up getting sequels
>>
>>342031495
Dark Souls
>>
>>342034317
Shit, that's how long it takes for the story to even start.
>>
>>342031495
>Chill out dude, it's Bethesda, and mods will fix it

I hate this line of thought so much, it's okay to make a clunky mess because it's fucking Bethesda anyway, it's okay if they do it.
>>
>>342034716
Same for Obsidian too - how many buggy, broken messes do they need to put out before people accept they are shit programmers?
>>
>>342034716
I think it used to be ok back in their earlier days because the games were good enough that they redeemed how clunky and broken things were. Besides, doing a project like Morrowind was ambitious; one expected bugs. But lately, their storylines have fallen to shit, and they pushing their boundaries anymore--no reason they can't give a polished product.
