They mention the Goddess Hylia in the E3 demo, which implies the game takes place after Skyward Sword and before any other game.
Which is weird because we have Koroks in the game so I think someone just fucked up somewhere.

I think it possibly may be the flooding itself.
The land is pretty barren, showing that people don't really exist anymore. The voice in the beginning says Link needs to wake up now and they need him more than ever, implying there is a great evil that only he can stop before the gods intervene. The hero disappeared when this great evil ravaged the land, so this may be the gap between the hero returning and the goddesses flooding Hyrule.
The old man at the start is definitely Ganondorf too. Dark clothing, darker skin. The only thing that doesn't match is the white beard, but this could be an extremely aged Ganondorf.

Link and Zelda had nightmares of doom in OOT. Apply time travel mechanics to visions of the future. To see the doomed future, it must have happened in some timeline. The doomed timeline is the line in which Link and Zelda didn't have nightmares.
Not lore but my hopes for the flying object that you can see in BotW footage lie with it hopefully moving around the world. Why? Because you can do this simple yet awesome thing:

Whenever Link's technology improves, that should mean a game that is further in the past. Someday, they will make a game that is so far in the past, it reaches the peak of Hyrule's technology. All ruins will be new construction. The Goddesses will be explained in scientific terms.

That could go either direction. This could be after the oracle resurrection, or it could be some kind of pig spirit before he is born. It could be the missing segment that transitions Demise into Ganon. If this is a Demise/Ganon, it could be a place after SS and before OOT.

We are talking about a Nintendo game here. They are not known for putting tons of lore and thought into Zelda plots and every time they try to do something more complicated they fuck everything up, mostly due to that timeline they so wanted to include.
I like discussing new ideas in these threads, but in the end I know I shouldn't get myself too much hyped: Nintendo will never deliver the plot and suspence we'd like to see in this Zelda game.

Also I agree that sure the storys themselves don't PRESENT lore but that doesn't mean lore isnt there. A fair amount of warhammer lore isnt presented through storys yet it is still considered lore. It's going to be the same it always was, Story presented is shallow but if you take a look there is some more to explore. I'm not saying there is a ton of lore but don't act like simple outlines arent something that can't be entertained. Elaborating on the context of the game when there is some universal context isn't somehow bad.

Except Aonuma confirmed that it's a new installment, not a remake of a previous game.
The game takes place in an alternate timeline that branches off just before Wind Waker.
Instead of no hero showing up, we get futuristic new Link
Why is everyone so confused about the timeline placement? It seems pretty straightforward:
1) Hyrule isn't underwater
2) The Master Sword is in the sacred grove and so old and disused it's rusted
3) Temple of Time is partially (but not completely) ruined
4) Sheikah are not extinct
Literally the only placement that fits all of these criteria is the ass end of the downfall timeline, like post-Zelda II. Impa existed in Zelda II which means the Sheikah were around, the major settlements were (retroactively) named in honor of the OoT era sages, and the Master Sword would have been sitting in the grove for centuries. So the new game goes way after Zelda II ends.
The only stumbling block is the Koroks but that's not even that bad for two reasons: races in Zelda are constantly changing in extreme ways, and it seems likely that some minor side shit in this game was warped in from parallel timelines by advanced Sheikah tech, like Wolf Link.
