4, 6 or 7 is probably the best; they have good stories/characters, and relatively simple growth systems that don't require much abuse or grinding to be strong unlike 3 or 5.
10 is pretty good too, it's basically the last good FF game.

I'm so glad the ATB meme is largely dead now. Turn-based is great, real time is great. ATB is the completely unsatisfying middle ground. I think the only game I liked ATB in was Chrono Trigger, and that's because they had the enemies actually move around and shit. There were some clever uses of it.

No, it didn't. Tactics has serious problems with job balance - and balance in general - that were minor in FFV in comparison, the game isn't anywhere close to as challenging as FFV (which is a low bar to pass in the first place) so there's less incentive to experiment with its job system, and it really doesn't help that the game is set up to favor blowing up enemies before they can act.

i started with ff8 or ff4/5. no idea. it was fun and the story is lovely as hell. but so is any story in ff, that's the great thing about it, but it doesn't really matter. just pick one.
i downloaded a shitton of roms for my visual boy advance after i learned that this stuff even exists and played everything at once, romwise but i only had ff8 for the pc first.

you're fairly new to all this that's why i recommend the roms. check it out, see if you like it. then check steam, get the reworked versions for the pc. it should be worth it.
