I've got this. It was pretty cheap and the sound quality is pretty nice, although my set is a few years old and is starting to have a minor static crackling only when I turn the scroll wheel to change the volume.
I'd use a headset but I've always been paranoid of someone coming into my house and either stealing my valuables or murdering me horribly, so desktop speakers work fine for me.

I personally love 5.1 systems and have this one (pic) but while it's cool, I would not recommend buying it as you can never change the subwoofer to a better one.
I even have a 600 ohm sound card but no actual 600 ohm headphones to use with it so everything I plug into it just sounds ear piercingly loud. Those things are expensive.
Anyway, 5.1 optical systems are great and the way to go since most games/movies with surround options already have the positional audi set up perfectly. There's no better immersion than having the actual 360 degrees of sounds coming from their exact positions and directions.

No, surround sound is legit when set up and calibrated properly. Head phone surround sound is a meme though. Because the drivers are so close to your ear, there is no interaction between the sound waves and your head. The slight changes in sound caused by those interactions is a huge factor in discerning the position of a sound.

Currently running those as well. Not bad for how cheap they were, but I did had to adjust the frequencies. Turn up the treble and turn down the bass a bit and it's pretty solid.

People can actually only hear from two directions, though.
But thanks to our brains being fucking incredible it can use those directions combined with different volumes depending on the ear closest to the noise source and our sight to calculate pretty damn accurately where a sound comes from.
A classic example of this (sound only) is the virtual barber shop (youtube it).
