The route in general is quite strange in how it is laid out, a 'pragmatic' route is a very strange one to suddenly add blatantly evil shit like True Assassin and AN ANCIENT EVIL AWAKENS, it even makes 'evil' versions of existing characters (Saber and Berseker). All of those things would probably have worked better in the other routes, they seemed pretty out of place because Shirou was seemingly supposed to be somewhat more morally grey, but Nasu never shows Shirou or his allies doing anything bad at all for the whole route (implied at best) and any character that would be a better representation of a non-pragmatic 'good' character is either made evil or removed (Archer, Saber) so Shirou remains the moral centre of the universe even in the route where he's supposed to not be a good guy anymore.

The worst thing about this is that they fucked up the original problem. Instead of the original dilemma, where no one can interact and if you are betrayed once you die, in this case people have multiple chances to be betrayed before they die.
Effectively, with the way things were in that game, all the players had to do was collectively agree that if anyone ever picks betray they will be betrayed by everyone else from then on.
At that point picking betray is suicide, and even if you are betrayed you will not die, so no one needs to pick betray in an attempt to defend themselves if they do not trust the other person.
It flat out doesn't work. The other stupid thing that game does is misunderstand Schroedinger Cat, like every fucking Japanese mention of it ever.

They didn't know the consequenes of reached 0 points in the begining, and I'm pretty sure they were under the assumption that the game could only be played a limited amount of times.
Also, considering the cast involves a woman going suicidal every 5 minutes, a kid who goes missing whenever you blink, some guy in an armor with "amnesia" that would pretty much destroy all of them, and a guy whose sole reasoning for being there is to blow the whole facility to the ground and kill everyone, kind of makes things a little complicated.

The vast majority of people actually Betray you in moments of weakness to gain the upper hand and escape. Almost everyone in VLR has a handful of dick moments. You really see the best and worst of everyone. Betraying is actually how you accomplish most of the necessary routes too.

You have to go in as either a pair or a single person, whenever he picks betray he either blames it on the other person or says he couldn't trust the person in the other box. To try and get people to distrust the other person even more I think he picks ally once in the game to try and convince people it wasn't him that picked betray as the pair.
People do eventually get sick of his shit though, yes. By that point he doesn't really care as he's ready to bomb the place.

I'll be honest, back before I knew making a choice had no effect on the game whatsoever, I actually had a hard time deciding between factions in Fallout 4. None of them were inherently good and each had their flaws.
Same with New Vegas, I never felt like one faction was better than another and I love the game for that.

It's been years but let me give it a shot.
First remember elemental alignments Blue>Red>Green>Black. Don't worry about rankings, they're nice, but not worth it if you're having trouble. Pay attention to rumors of dragons/trainers, you want to get them all.
Red spirits aren't really worth it untill they get some specific Aoe spells.Not all skills are the same for every character though so pay attention.
Blue spirits will eventually get a skill called ether sink which will be really important mid to late game.If a character defeats an enemy they will lose some mind score and some later skills have mind requirements, keep it it mind.
