The battle system is really fucking stupid. Essentially party members learn session attacks, which typically have stupidly long animations, when you hit a weak point, they do their session attacks.
That's it. That's the entire battle system, a shitty version of demon co-op.
On top of that the customization is barely existent,first of all you can't even name your protagonist, and the customization of team building/skill pool building you get in MT games is replaced by weapons you craft that teach a single skill and supply your performa with the changes to their weak/res/null/etc elements. Class changes are practically the same thing.

Let's say that the original version of this game wasn't made in Japan, pretend that it was made in America and came out first for PC with all the ages, costumes and dialogue in-tact. English VA that worked in games like MGS, Capcom and Valve games shit all over tsome of the most "pro" jap VA. English dubs often fail not because of the lack of talents, but because they lack funding for good VAs or a good dub director.
I'm not saying that newbie VAs should go into the trash, I'm saying that they should spend more time preparing and directing the newbie VAs and make retakes when neccessary but most studios don't give a shit.
Japanese VA scene is fucking rotten also. Popular VAs are usually those who have somehow maintained a celebrity status for X reason (like being physically attractive) and not because they are actually good at what they do. VAs hardly have jobs when they are past 40 because they can't be marketed as if they were models. Most of the VAs considered "pro" nowadays are fucking shit and even worst they are stuck with one or two type of voice regardless of character.

Why the fuck would origin of source material matter when we are talking of the quality of the actors themselves? A VA that has extensively practiced the craft will deliver a good quality performance always regardless of what it's being dubbed and if they slipped it's very likely the fault of the dub director. The "voice overs made in the same country as source material" meme needs to die.
Oh hey Layton is a Japanese game and the English VAs are great, so much I have never turned to play the gameor watch the movie in Japanese. I tried and ended up putting the English audio back. Fire Emblem Awakening was also ridden with shit tier voice acting in the Japanese version, almost every character made me cringe and couldn't believe how some of these people landed the job to begin with.
