I guess the humor was a lot better. I don't think it was written as well as it was in 3 though. if were talking pure funnies I think MGS3 had the best sense of humor.

One is good overall but the sequels mostly did everything better at least in some regard. MGSV is pretty awful but it's gameplay is the most fluid. Unlijke MGS1's clunky controls.

It depends on what you want out of an MGS game. MGR has a large abundance of codec conversations on par with MGS1, and surpassing it; filled with character development and world building conversations as well as humor that just rolls off the tongue really. Nothing like the forced Kaz hamburger tapes, which were still pretty humorous don't get me wrong. MGR has conspiracy, a melee fight with the final boss, ideological exchanges ala older MGS (nothing like that jeep cutscene,) its narrative is really solid. The combat is functional I don't praise the combat too much.

Well your first mistake was thinking a MGR game was going to be the same as an MGS game.
MGR was pretty great, if totally silly. Great boss fights, the Linkin Park tier music actually was a strength instead of a weakness, and story was....ok.
And best of all, tons of fan service with codec calls and easter eggs.
Oh, and it was a finished/complete game.
MGSV is the greatest case of "What could have been".
Rising delivered a full package.

Rising is better at being what it tries to be. It has a more narrow scope but it is much more polished. MGSV was too ambitious and ended up unfinished.
The games are completely different genres so you can't really compare them in other aspects.
