Stand Alone Complex is arguably the best of the franchise. It replaces a lot of the weird spirituality and philosophy from the movie with political intrigue, though.
Arise is completely skippable, however.

Ghost in the Shell on the PS1 is the best licensed game; it has you piloting a Fuchikoma with the ability to walk/slide entirely on walls and ceilings and fighting these huge badass bosses. Every mission feels unique and has original anime shorts between them, the soundtrack is fantastic aswell.
Unofficially, Binary Domain. On the surface it looks like a generic third person squad shooter and though it is exactly that, it's so much more. It was made by the Yakuza team so you know it's gonna have 10/10 characters and over-the-top bosses and you'd not be disappointed with either. It feels like they just watched SAC and said yeah lets just make a video game about androids and robots in Neo-Tokyo that would be cool as shit and it is.
Also one of your squadmates is a big black dude with a heavy machine gun that asks you if you want to double team some underage prostitutes and is the only person to approve of you hitting on underage girls so take from that what you will. Soundtrack is also cool

The laughing man arc was awesome. Lots of discussions about AI, how technology and society integrate, about identity, a surveillance state, etc. The Tachikomas develop their own personality and arguably become sentient. One of the Tachikomas even gives a definition of God that I'd never heard before.

What should a new Ghost in the Shell game be like? First Assault does not have the kind of gameplay I had in mind for a GiTS game at all.
Stealth, planning, slow progression, a few very intense gunfights and story are what I had in mind. Multiplayer should have been something closer to the Rainbow six: Siege or one of the older game in my opinion.

Honestly I don't think a Section 9 game could properly encapsulate the feeling of the anime at all. The action scenes are great but they're few and far between to break up all the dialogue/hacking/background checking
No two episodes are really the same, but that would be such a difficult thing to sort out in a video game without just making everything a mediocre jack-of-all-trades type deal

Earlier Rainbow Six games had a planning phase that would let you determine the point of entry, the equipment your squad would have, and a plethora of other options before you went in to execute the mission.

It's a bit more prevalent in the anime, but regardless, I'd say that a good 30% of HnK is Ken seeing thugs harassing random wastelanders and punching them using either the hundred crack fist or whatever technique he decides on that week. In fact, even the movie where they cut out most of that stuff, the character introductions are still largely just them harassing random no-names. (Ken saves Lyn from that group of thugs in the first few minutes, Rei just cuts through a bunch of guys faces with no real effort, Raoh spends most of his time just running over useless peons while conquering the wastelands, et cetera, et cetera)

What bothers me the most is that I've still even played better CS clones then this. I wish they would have tried something new or just held their cards untill they got more money for something better. I hope people won't think of GITS video games as a dead end because of this.
