People have been shouting that Paper Mario will never recover because Sticker Star outsold The Thousand Year Door and thus its formula has become the status quo. However, most people don't take into account that the 3DS' install base far exceeded the Game Cube's at the time. Besides this, Sticker Star has had more time to sell; TTYD was cut short by the discontinuation of the Game Cube.
Don't think that matters? Super Paper Mario sold almost double Sticker Star because it was on a hugely popular system and ample time to sell since it came out in the Wii's first year. Yes, despite it being different and many people hating it at the time, it did better than the other two games combined.
What does this mean for Colour Splash? The game is releasing on a poor-selling system more comparable to the GC in sales. In addition, the NX is going to overshadow any Wii U game besides Zelda. Thus, Colour Splash sales are almost guaranteed to be horrible. If you're on the fence about buying the game, buy it used and you'll 100% guarantee that it sells poorly.
They will NOT make another Sticker Star after this one bombs. Absolutely not. It's just a matter of where they go next or whether they stop PM altogether. Just do your part.

First 2 games are RPG's with a lot of style in the world, characters, plotlines and ect.
SPM releases and its a platformer with a good bit less style, recives a mixed opinion, but almost everyone on both sides wants the game to go back to the original formula
E3 2012 (I think) they have a demo for the new paper mario for 3DS, it has partners and RPG combat like the classic one, and all signs point towards a return to the original formula
Game releases like a year later, while nintendo was silent up until then, and it's nothing like the demo, and has a shit ton of major flaws. There are far fewer defending it than there were SPM

It could still have level-specific subplots like the Enigmansion in Sticker Star did. This kind of thing is exactly why they disappeared in the first place. They just take up so much space in every game they appear in. Whereas before you could have a Mario game with 7 wholly unique and original bosses, now you get seven Koopa babies for the dozenth time, and often times the fights even have a lot in common.
Their appearances in games like Superstar Saga and Smash Bros was fine since they were just some minibosses at the end or just some alt costumes. When they get elevated to anything more important they just crowd the place.
