Compared to what? Chinsy plastic nintendo handhelds? I'd say the price was on point for a consumer electronic of it's tech level and build quality. Nintendo has always designed their handhelds to be as inexpensive as possible so they're accessible to as many consumers as possible and are cheap enough for parents to buy for kids. any company that wants to enter the handheld market is going to be 100% that they have no chance to beat Nintendo in sales volume. The only option is to offer a more expensive and advanced product to attract customers with more to spend and are willing to pay higher prices for nicer stuff.
since the first Gameboy, Nintendo had been the "default" handheld the way the iPod became the "default" player. The Lynx, Game Gear, and Turbo Express were all superior to it in every quantifiable way, and were also much pricier.
Fyi, if you adjust for inflation, all 3 of them were more expensive at release than the Vita, makinv the "ridiculously expensive" Vita cheaper than any non-Nintendo handheld that wasn't expressly designed to be an inexpensive toy (tiger, etc)

It's a shame because the system itself is really nice, but Sony has just made so many bad decisions. I can't even use multiple accounts on one card for fuck's sake. I guess it doesn't matter so much anymore after realizing that the Japanese PSN has shitty prices, but still, there are times I'd like to play Japanese games/DLC without having to format my card. I just switched to my US account though because prices aren't total shit, the only game this might pose a problem for is Cyber Sleuth (if the Japanese version's price ever drops) because it sounds like it actually has some decent DLC.

Delta basically encapsulates everything that went wrong with the Vita.
Vita is hardly failing in Japan, but it is pretty funny that you can still buy PS3 and Vita memory cards in japan while in the US and Canada on Amazon they are only sold through resellers now.
Right now I just use mine to pirate Japanese PSP games while waiting for a decent deal on memory cards if it ever happens, so I can change regions and have enough space to actually get stuff.

I'm assuming you never played the original and dove right into Delta. It added many great features and additions that I loved from a pure gameplay standpoint, but everything else that made the game great went right into the shitter. Original story was nothing but testament tier parables. Delta literally pulled all of its new content from goddamn children's fairy tales. It's not even like it was inspiration. They were literally just the fairy tales, verbatim.
And then all the characters that were added were no longer these tragic souls with equally tragic stories, they were just overdesigned weebshit anime girls with all the stupid overused tropes that go along with them.
