hey /v/

I just built a gaming PC for the first time, it's pretty beefy

all my life I grew up with underpowered hardware, I had a PS1, a GBA, a wii, and then a crappy laptop with onboard graphics for school

basically I've never played a game with good graphics in my life

what's the first game I should play?

I was pretty intimidated because I don't know much about computers but the actual assembly is really easy

if you follow a tutorial and your motherboard manual it's honestly like legos. everyone says that but it's true. the only hard part is clamping on and screwing down your CPU cooler, and making sure your cables aren't a damn mess

it's more time-consuming than hard. it took me all day to do it
>>
These are the days where graphical disparity has been at its least ever.
>>
>>341879397

This. Just do some research on it, its not as complicated as it would seem. Just go on https://pcpartpicker.com/ and see what others are doing, or just use one of the ones someone else has done already.

Also, there is nothing more comfy than spending an afternoon putting a pc together with music in the background and a 6-pack.

Logical increments is your best friend, otherwise it's just a matter of looking at each part one by one and seeing which one you want. Only thing worth noting really is the recent switch to DDR4 memory on motherboards and the CPU slot used on the motherboard along with the CPU you want.

I'm honestly so bad at computers but I really wanna try building my own. I wonder what happens after you've built it and you turn on the power. Since there's no OS what the fuck actually happens? And how would I go about transfering my copy of W7 that I have on my old computer to the one I just built?
>>
>>341885006

You need the cd key. If it's a pre built should be on a sticker somewhere. Any installation ISO will work long as you have a cd key.

As for no os every pc has a bios on the motherboard. That's what loads up when there's no os or hard drive. It's just a simple command prompt used to install the os and overclocking the cpu among other things

Not sure if ms checks if two pcs are using the same key. It wouldn't cause an issue if you install it on the new hard drive and didn't use the other one. Can't you just transfer the hard drive to the new pc?

Also I forgot to mention the important but that windows 7 key that are OEM are tied to the motherboard. Meaning they can't be used elsewhere on a new pc with another mobo.

You can check if it is by looking at the Id by right clicking my computer to properties and looking here. If it says OEM its OEM
>>
Guys I built my first rig last night but it won't turn on. The mobo is getting power (evident by mouse led and fans turning on) but when I hook up the psu it doesn't power on. I've tried everything. What gives? Is the mobo fried or is the psu not powerful enough?

That's bit odd. How is the mobo receiving power if you say when you hook the psu up it doesn't power on? The fan and mouse are powered through the mobo so if the mouse is on the mobo is getting the power just fine it's definitely not fried. Are you sure you monitor is connected to the gpu? Or that the gpu is receiving enough power through all it's connectors? What gpu do you have? Is the switch on the psu switched to on through the back? There should only be two main things connected to the mobo

The PSU should always be switched to on. The power button on the pc controls everything. There's also a power switch on the PSU but that doesn't turn the pc on it just activates power.

The power cable on the pc should be connected to the mobo. They usually go here where the blue box is.
>>
>>341893585

Oh and by power cable I mean the cable that is attached to the power button on the case. The switch on the power supply is just to feed or cut power to the mobo. It doesn't turn it on like I said but you always keep it on unless for some reason your pc won't shut down so you turn it off to cut power.

Also I was stupid not to mention this since I figured it was common sense but always cut/disconnect the power supply when you tamper with the motherboard like switching out a video card or plugging in those connectors. Then I usually hit the power switch once it's disconnected so that the last bit of power gets used. Probably just paranoia on my end but I haven't had any troubles doing this.

If I could do it all over again, I'd get a bigger case and a sturdier one at that. The CoolerMaster cases are okay, but they fall to pieces in less than a year.

I had no worries about doing it right, cause I followed basically every rule step my step, and anything I did wrong I could replace, but I wish I had known about quality parts and cases.

Honestly, it seems like the only way to realistically fuck up is to fry your motherboard or some shit with static so as long as you take measures against that and follow the manual you should be fine.

Never usually. The development team just issues out a bunch of specifications for what the game will run on minimally, but things like resolution aren't taken into account very often.

Pushing the ram in is the worst thing, the mobo bends so much. I've gotten used to it though and nowadays it's not that scary at all
>>
>>341879219
Like everyone else is saying its piss easy.
I was scared shitless making my first one but it's really simple
Just look things up, don't force anything and it should all be fine.

Look up youtube videos, Make sure you know what part you're putting into where etc.
Places like PCPartpicker are good since they'll make sure its all compatible
Otherwise just look up premade builds on google.
You can also use sites like GameDebate to see if you can run anything.
>>
>>341899428
>Like everyone else is saying its piss easy.

It's not hard but the little things like connecting the case power connectors to the mobo and sound and sata cables and putting the cpu in correctly, installing the cooler, snapping in ram correct, video card, powering everything properly etc etc can be overwhelming the first time. Especially for people that know nothing.
>>
