What are some good Lovecraftian games, /v/? Are there any that actually, properly adapt his work?

Bloodborne and Darkest Dungeon have some good Lovecraft elements, with Bloodborne having more of the cosmic horror elements

Nothing really quite encapsules the theme of cosmic fear of unknown in video game form but if you just want to experience to superficial elements then Dark Corners of Earth is a fun experience

Eternal Darkness?

Cosmic horror isn't really used in to many videogames.

Lovecraft would be a /pol/ poster in today's time. The guy was pretty awesome. Granted, he might of just off'd himself seeing how many liberal cucks obsess over his "The Call of Cthulhu", which even he disliked.

Bloodborne.
>Fishing Hamlet is Shadows over Insmouth
>Cosmic entities
>Insanity as a gameplay mechanic

>killing Great Ones and actually ascending to their level
>not immediately going mad as soon as you start seeing eldrich shit
not that close
>>
>>341872773
I'm sure you heard other people saying this but, Bloodborne.

It has a sanity meter, with less insight your "beast transformation" lasts more and deals more damage, or if you have a lot of insight you start seeing the world as it truly is, and Frenzy affects you more. It also has a really good atmosphere.

The only thing that can be a problem if you are a more hardcore fan is that in Bloodborne you eventually gather enough power to kill the beings.
>>
>>341874091
Wasn't Lovecraft considered unusually racist, even among his own contemporaries?
>>
>>341872773
CoC: Dark Corners of the Earth, if you can get the fucking thing to not crash or lock up.
CoC: The Wasted Land, if you want an impossible to beat turn based strategy game.
CoC: Prisoner of Ice. piss poor adventure game with a lovecraft theme.
CoC: Shadow of the Comet, another piss poor adventure game but with memes.
Penumbra/Black Plague, Lovecraft inspired game with the engine named after HP Lovecraft, halfway decent.
Then you have some random CoC game coming out ass end of this year or next year which will probably just be a rip off of outlast.
>>
>>341873954

My interpretation of the game might be wrong but i saw it as literally "just a dream" created by the great ones to manipulate you. whenever someone or thing dies, it just awakes (like you submit ending)

you are mostly breaking free from their control, not killing them (and even then, the final boss wanted someone who could stand to him, as it triggers some form of transformation and turn you into one of them)
>>
>>341873954
You only kill one and that is by transcending into a cosmic entity.
>Rom is the husk of a brain dead great one
>Amygdala are just normal creatures
>Brain of mensis is just a brain
>Ebreitas is an abandoned spawn
>Moon presence only dies because you become a Great One
>>341874628
Frenzy is your brain rapidly learning forbidden knowledge. Insight is learning it safely. You can have knowledge and not go insane.
>>
>>341874795
>but with memes

Go on...
>>
>>341874747
Oh without a doubt, I'm not kidding when I say he's pol incarnated

Here's one of his poems:

When, long ago, the gods created Earth
In Iove's fair image Man was shaped at birth.
The beasts for lesser parts were next designed;
Yet were they too remote from humankind.
To fill the gap, and join the rest to Man,
Th'Olympian host conceiv'd a clever plan.
A beast they wrought, in semi-human figure,
Filled it with vice, and called the thing a Nigger.
>>
>>341874795
>Then you have some random CoC game coming out ass end of this year or next year which will probably just be a rip off of outlast.

There are actually 3 of them. The Sinking City, Call of Cthulhu and some other I forgot.
>>

IMO I think that it's more that since Great Ones have a transcendental existence, even if you kill their body in one reality, they can still survive in others. See: Great Ones living in the CDs after you kill them in Yharnam/the Nightmare

People will say Bloodborne, and they're right, it's an excellent "Lovecroftian" game. But the moments passed and if you go into it after having it recommended for that reason you will likely be disappointed.

Bloodbornes story and "twist" (if you can call it that) work because it played in tandem with the gameplay and was a ruse. No one expected cosmic horror, the marketing and pre-release footage focused entirely on a Gothic style game with werewolves and other similar types of genre conventions you'd expect from Van Hellsing.

When we finally played the game that stuff was all there, no false marketing or trickery (ala MGS2), but there was obviously something more going on than a Plauge of Beasts, and early game you get a few hints with references to Great Ones and some otherworldly archetiture that just gives off unsettling vibes. If (aka WHEN) you get dropkicked into Insta-kill by a Snatcher it becomes even more apparent that something is amiss, spoopy Latin chanting, statues of full blown Ayy-Lmaos and mummified corpses wearing cages on thier heads. From there it goes further and further down the rabbithole, traversing nightmares/dreams and unveiling fucked up nature of the Church, even meeting actual great ones.

Coming back to my other point, the story ties into the gameplay, it's not just scary because of the story, as a player you are always one mistake away from death and death can be devestating since lanterns are so few. Plus there's no map, or direction of any kind, you're lost and each step past where you made it last time could unveil a new horror, both storywise (I.e a disgusting monster that is repulsive to look at) or Gameplaywise (repulsive monster kills you in 2). This is doubly true because the game subverts expectations, if you went in expecting werewolves and zombies, and suddenly find a octopus man that Litterally slurps on your brain, you start expecting ANYTGING to be around the next corner.

"The fear of unknown" etc...

>muh black racism
Lovecraft hated fucking everyone that wasn't from England, cause he had a solid steel hard-on for the Brits. He shit on blacks, arabs, rednecks, eskimos. Hell, half of his non-deific alien races were backwards ponces that fucked themselves into oblivion.

And at the end of the day, so fucking what? People act like he was out stringing minorities up on a daily basis and living the unrepentant high life, when in reality he was an antisocial sperglord who wrote a few offensive poems and was so fucking poor it literally killed him. It's like picking on that stuttering fat kid in high school who never bathed and everyone hated, except everyone waited a hundred fucking years after he died to insult him.

The whole premise of the game is that you gain insight to be able to see the great ones and eventually kill them. The player isn't seen as a normal human, obviously. You can see what happened to the residents of Yharnam if you want to see how humans coped against the great ones.

You're right about the last part. Bloodborne's similarity is in the less well known aspects of Lovecraft's work, from what I've heard. The emphasis on a single city to which the protagonist is an outsider, tainted bloodlines caused by people meddling in things they should not have and and the concept of insight are things that turn up again and again in his stories.

More than madness or insignificance, Lovecraft places a lot of emphasis on the idea of being permanently changed by outside forces; the idea of now knowing something and never being able to go back to your state of ignorance or worse, being physically corrupted by it.

"My manifestations on your planet's extension, the Ancient Ones, have sent you as one who would lately have returned to small lands of dream which he had lost, yet who with greater freedom has risen to greater and nobler desires and curiosities. You wished to sail up golden Oukranos, to search out forgotten ivory cities in orchid-heavy Kled, and to reign on the opal throne of Ilek-Vad, whose fabulous towers and numberless domes rise mighty toward a single red star in a firmament alien to your earth and to all matter. Now, with the passing of two Gates, you wish loftier things. You would not flee like a child from a scene disliked to a dream beloved, but would plunge like a man into that last and inmost of secrets which lies behind all scenes and dreams. What you wish, I have found good; and I am ready to grant that which I have granted eleven times only to beings of your planet - five times only to those you call men, or those resembling them. I am ready to shew you the Ultimate Mystery, to look on which is to blast a feeble spirit. Yet before you gaze full at that last and first of secrets you may still wield a free choice, and return if you will through the two Gates with the Veil still unrent before your eyes."

No he fucking wasn't.

I say this every goddamn thread, I feel like a broken record.

I live in Rhode Island, lived there all my life. It's always been full of extremely racist people. An autist like Lovecraft most likely just adopted the exact same personality as his contemporaries, but because no one these days wants people to know their ancestors are racist, they deny it. Fact is he hated fucking everything, to the point Shadow over Innsmouth's fishpeople were probably a reference to his neighbors, because 20s Rhode Island outside of some rich people areas was a redneck shithole full of inbreds who hated black people the same way people nowadays hate cockroaches.

In after faggots talking about Bloodborne.

Realistically, as shit as it may have been, Amnesia was probably the best adaptation of Lovecraft's early works. Call of Cthulhu Dark Corners of the Earth (until you get guns) was probably the best of his creeping dread later work.

He's a bit of a meme but his writing is genuinely entertaining. It makes me sad that people think he's just "DUDE TENTACLES LMAO"

my favorite work of lovecraft

When, long ago, the gods created Earth
In Jove's fair image Man was shaped at birth.
The beasts for lesser parts were next designed;
Yet were they too remote from humankind.
To fill the gap, and join the rest to Man,
Th'Olympian host conceiv'd a clever plan.
A beast they wrought, in semi-human figure,
Filled it with vice, and called the thing a Nigger.

that's so cute, let me guess: lovecraft = cthulhu = tentacles right?

the very point of Lovecraft is that humans are NOT the center of the universe, and the cosmos doesn't give a single shit about these hairless apes.

when the game feature ayy that come FOR humans, with a protagonist that become a supposedly "god", it's EVERYTHING but Lovecraft

>no just cause x has lovecraftian elements and enemies doesn't mean it's lovecraftian
>just cause y is a straight adaptation of a lovecraft story doesn't mean it's lovecraftian
>just cause z involves unknowable and immensely powerful alien gods and the insignificance and impotence of mankind in relation to said alien gods is a major theme doesn't mean it's lovecraftian

These can all be true for very valid reasons. The first one refers to plebs who think that putting tentacles in anything automatically makes said thing lovecraftian, when it really just makes things generic pulp sci fi. I remember reading these "lovecraft" inspired comic which was about these paranormal researchers who come across this occult inscription and basically through some way most of them end up dying after having to fight this giant blob with tentacles. The lovecraftian elements were only very vaguely there

The second is basically an extension of the first argument. A straight adaptation of a Lovecraft story doesn't necessarily mean it actually even matches the feeling of the stories, or the overall themes. Case in point, the Dreams in the Witch House adaptation for Masters of Horror

The last one can also be misused if the themes are not handled properly. The whole "powerful gods that just play with mortals" can be traced to something as common as Greek mythology, so just having "these powerful beings that are so above us and see us as nothing but dust in their grand scheme" doesn't automatically translate to being Lovecraftian

It's a combination of all these elements with a constant underlying feel of dread that really makes a work, whether it is film, literature or a videogame, feel Lovecraftian

Actually as a prime fucking example of literature that isn't Lovecraftian is anything written by that hack Derleth. The mythos written by him is nothing more than a bad attempt at recreating christian mythology using aliens.

Minor Horrors:
Pickman's Model
The Things ad the Doorstep (probably)

Major Horrors:
The Shunned House
The Dunwich Horror

I hope youre not implying lovecrafts "literature" is deep in any form or fashion

your average stephen king story has more depth than the lovecraft meme, the only remotely good things lovecraft ever made were the color out of space and the shadow over innsmouth+ having a pretty interesting cosmic horror backbone on his stories instead of using more generic horror tropes
