I liked it but the visuals were utter ass.
I hated those GBA games that tried too hard to have pseud-3D and ended up looking like pixelated mess.

I borrowed the first game from a friend.
It was okay. Music is very memorable, didn't care for the characters.
Sequel had much better puzzles.
>>341853601
Also this. Magazines were praising it at the time, but the wonky perspective and blurry explosions during battles really bugged me.
>>
It's a pretty good game when people aren't talking your ear off.
>>
I liked the puzzles and I thought the gameplay system had some potential, though that potential was wasted due to the complete lack of difficulty.

The setting was good and the overall storyline was fine, but the writing was poor.

Overall, a decent game. Definitely a huge improvement from the Shining Force games.
>>
>>341853601
They were pretty badass in 2001.
>>
>>341853394
>You played it
Yes.
>and you liked it.
No.
As a child I gave up around the Silk Road because it was boring as fuck. I started replaying it recently and realized what's wrong with it: it's wordy and slow without saying anything of value, it's ridiculously easy, and there are no surprises. And every stop along the way feels more like an arbitrary roadblock than an adventure.

The only good part of the game is Saturos. His music is great, his design is great (aside from being monochrome), and if you skip Trent he's the hardest Boss in the series. You have to use ACTUAL TACTICS to beat him.

>>
Well, yeah. It was a good game.
Reading minds, telekinetic bullshittery, djinn collectan, that weird class-system they had by combining djinn. Shit was good. Graphics were kinda ass in combat though.
>>
>>341853601
The world map is the worst offender. It's a pretty good map overplayed on a 3D plane. The problem is they did it at an angle where it doesn't even look 3D and just distorts the sprites.
>>
>>341854530

The only boss harder that Trent-skip Saturos for me in all of Golden Sun barring Dullahan's bullshit was during my best attempt at a low-level run(boss exp only), fighting Deadbeard at Level 18.

USE DJINNI AND RISK GETTING ONE-ROUNDED BY A DOUBLE SHINE PLASMA? DON'T USE DJINNI AND RISK THE SAME THING ANYWAYS WHILE KILLING HIM VERY SLOWLY?

It is kind of a shame that -that- of all things is the only thing that particular Saturos fight can come close to in terms of difficulty.

I don't think I have the patience to do it again with TLA.

I like SRPGs, but Shining Force is just terrible. Awful AI, very slow gameplay, large RNG factor, minimal tactical depth. Golden Sun's battle system on the other hand is quite good.

I played it on an emulator and really liked it. Only later I realized that I was using the turbo button pretty damn often and the game would be much worse off without that option.

The novelty of 3D on a handheld was strong back in the day. GBA games that sticked to proper 2D graphics aged way better.

>>341855315
First Boss Best Boss is the worst. I beat both games and it strikes me how stupid some of the decisions in the games are.

Like, why the fuck are Menardi and Karst two separate characters? Menardi adds fuckall and even HURTS the game, giving Saturos someone to mysteriously chatter with instead of establishing his character and letting him merge into a fuckoff dragon instead of giving you a proper Saturos2. Why the fuck are all the bosses so weak? Why all the needless padding? Both games make Xenogears feel fast paced.
>>
>>341856194
Menardi was a weak tag-along only there to question Saturos' decisions so he'd get more smug dialogue to bloat the play time.
Hell, she's even shit in the fight.

If I could arrest people for having wrong opinions, I'd start with anyone who dislikes the first two Golden Sun games. Honestly, I spend too much time on this shithole, when I go to ANY other forum, I see nothing but love for these games. Why does /v/ hate so many classic games? Are you just tired of hearing about them, so you shitpost in the vain hopes that someone will talk about your super obscure favorite game instead? Yes, obviously.
I can totally understand why some people don't like Chrono Trigger, even though I think it's pretty good (not GOAT, but pretty good). We have too many kids and retards on /v/ who don't understand that it's okay to think "good" games are bad and "bad" games are good as long as you can substantiate your opinion. We have even more people who don't understand that it's okay to dislike things you know are good and like things you know are bad, sadly.
>>
>>341858490
Yeah, Up Dog. What kind of game is it?
>>
>>341856541
Basically, yes. If you NEED a tagalong they may as well have made Karst follow Saturos around but get separated during the earthquake at the end of part 1. Regardless of whether Karst shows up during or after the first game, Menardi is entirely redundant.

The game could use a fan project to fix the more glaring problems, like the shitty faux-mode7 world map, the low difficulty, the extremely tedious dialogue, etc.

It is pretty easy, and the Black Omen is kind of annoying and too long, especially given the replay heavy nature of the game.

And I mean, Robo basically gets two sidequests while Marle is stuck with that pretty lame one and Ayla doesn't even get a real one.
>>

I spent the whole time waiting for it to get good since it was billed as this new amazing thing.

Then the game ended a few seconds later and said 'buy the sequel!'
And then the sequel was pure, unrelenting garbage.
And the story just kept getting worse.

Hanging out in Lemuria was my favorite part of the series, followed closely by Colosso and Tret's Forest. Garou and the Sol Sanctum are up there as well.

Golden Sun's combat was bad and boiled down to djinn spam, and that's precisely why the bonus boss fucks with your djin (and still dies to Djinn spam), because they couldn't figure out anything better.

Also all main characters have interchangeable personality and you could hide their faces and no one would be able to tell who's talking just based on context.

I'm still perfectly okay with people liking it. I've liked plenty of average shit.

The problem is they just gave you too much to work with. If everyone only got two djinn and one optional one, the entire game could be shit like Tretskip Saturos. Switching Djinn would ACTUALLY MATTER, no character could have all four types, spamming Granite or Summons would have ACTUAL repercussions, etc.

>>341863539
Nigga that's like saying Final Fantasy V is hard if you don't use jobs or Mario and Luigi is bullshit if you don't use Bros Attacks. There's a big difference between one of several builds being broken and the core combat mechanic of the game being broken.

Yes. People call it Babby's First JRPG and it very well may be, but it's still a pretty great intro to the genre, AND it picked off where the SNES FFs left off when that series went off into Nomura-land.

>Did they forget the Mars Star?
Basically. They imply they'll take it from Isaac the next time they meet, but they don't try to grab it at either lighthouse. It's fucking stupid.

>>341864228
Gotta emulate the mon catching trend and the PS1/Saturn era RPG penchant for obtuse completion, bruh.
>>
>>341864090
I think the game would've been fine if the training weapon grinding wasn't incentivized, or was limited. It just makes the game a slog.
I'm sure you can go through and only master the weapons that you plan on using and a handful of others, but the opportunity to get stat ups with 0 penalty, even in a monotonous way, is to hard for me to pass up.

Yggdra Union is better anyway.

Shit's worth playing through entirely for the music. The overall visual design was refreshing and effortlessly cool (as far as my weeb sensibilities were concerned). And the GBA voice acting was a fun novelty at the time too.

My favorite thing about GS was how comfy things felt. Couldn't really care about the graphics quality tb h, the art style was great, and the music was great. I actually liked the puzzles too. Overall I loved the feeling of being on an adventure that it had. I don't really care about the flaws so much.

It was supposed to be an N64 game, hence the visuals. It would have been better as an N64 game instead of two games. The gameplay and battle system were flawed. How do you not let your teammates go for the other enemy when their targeted enemy is slain? Dragon Quest on the NES let you do that, a GBA game can't achieve that? That alone kills it for me.

Don't you dare defend that, that's poor game design, period. If two party members by default can take out one enemy working together, and you get a critical by chance, your other member should go for the next enemy, not defend. Golden Sun is an underwhelming series, and literally My First RPG used in the correct context. Dark Dawn was proof the series couldn't live up to its potential, it's just plagued by bad design choices.

Well, what other RPGs were out at the time that would've been good introductions to the JRPG genre?

Off the top of my head...Final Fantasy V Advance maybe?

>>341868640
Mario & Luigi. After 2001 you had much more to play with in the genre. No excuses. If Dark Dawn were an early DS title /v/ would be praising it even more.

>I played it on an emulator and really liked it. Only later I realized that I was using the turbo button pretty damn often and the game would be much worse off without that option.

I think he considers himself vulnerable as long as he's missing the Mars star's share of power. If Isaac and Wise One ganged up on him, he's toast.
>>
>>341869005

Not necessarily. The Mars Star has 1/4th of the power, not Isaac. And the Wise One wouldn't do shit. Hell, it's even missing. Even if they did, he doesn't do shit in Dark Dawn when they aren't around. He just farts around and shits on you the entire time.
>>
I played Golden Sun at release and I could not for the life of me figure out why people ended up liking the game so much. I didn't feel like there was anything special about it compared to Phantasy Star or Lufia
>>
>>341868098
That explains it every other fight you see where summon spam is the main goal, because that's actually what that whole fight is expecting you do and counter it like dead in tracks. Anyone who claims dullahan is cheesed with summon rushed is overpowered serverely, if you go in at the average elapsed level of 45-55, summon spam doesn't do shit to him to keep him from starting Djinn storm bullshit and you are forced to adopt no how many summons you got in before the first storm

At that generation, no pre FF7, or any FF in general was a good gateway rpg for kids at that time. Mario & Luigi is a kind of a bad intro into Rpgs because they are to heavily focused on action commands and obvious enemy muscle memory which very few other rpgs have that so not much would really translate into other games

Pokemon didn't do shit. I knew so many who love the shit out of pokemon, but couldn't bother to even start rpgs like final fantasy growing up because the story and combat was too complex to follow for them at that age. Golden Sun was the right amount of simple to follow to get kids hooked into Rpgs
