I thought about this the other day. Looking back, I wonder if I was ever truly happy, but video games back then definitely provoked a sense of joy and wonder that I don't get as often now.
I think part of it is realizing that I have to be a grown-ass man and do adult shit now, and I always get that feeling that video games/internet are unproductive which hinders my enjoyment.

its just the unfiltered textures, there is no dithering or "fake detail". its the textures as they were drawn. the whole point of texture filters were to smooth it out so it didn't make noise, and it turned out to look like fucking blurry shit

>there is no dithering
yes there is, when you use nearest neighbor it makes mach banding more prominent since there are no smooth transitions in color gradients

>fake detail
high frequency noise can create the impression of bump detail in stills

>the whole point of texture filters were to smooth it out so it didn't make noise
which is good because noise in an image is considered an error of image processing

>and it turned out to look like fucking blurry shit
nope
objectively looks better to people who don't get retro nostalgia boners

Growing up with 3D games its easy to not be able to appreciate this but video games approximate 3D. It's not real. Without growing up in it a lot of us took time to acclimate. Kids now all do it when they're 3 where growing up I was a boss at the first Zelda because 2D top down views and side scrolling was what I grew into.

There's a lot of unseen connections our brains go through to relate 3D images to 3D real world concepts. It's one giant analogy for our brain and some need more training than others to get it worked out.

>prove to me there is dithering
it won't be as prominent in quake 3 as it supports 32 bit color which is almost dithering proof but in any 16 bit color game (older ones) nearest neighbor will make dithering worse simply due to the way it works (large color contrasts between pixels) is similar to the mach banding effect

>fake detail isn't a fake term
basically the noise you get from nearest neighbor is basically incorrect resampling of textures

what you are seeing isnt so much representative of how the original texture looked like but a reproduction with lots of texel color data lost

high frequency contrasts stand out to our eyes, its basically what aliasing is

so the reason its fake detail is because it has a lot of high frequency color contrasts that stand out to our eyes generated from lossy texture data

>Btw, is there a way to disable filtering for Unreal/UT99?
yes, and the same for games like deus ex as well

1.) Download the latest OpenGL renderer for Unreal Tournament
http://www.cwdohnal.com/utglr/
2.) Install the renderer by placing it in the System folder within your Unreal folder
3.) Open the UnrealTournament.ini file also found in the System subdirectory within your Unreal folder with your text editor
4.) Add the line;
NoFiltering=True
-under [WinDrv.WindowsClient]
5.) Add the lines;
HighResTextureSmooth=False
LowResTextureSmooth=False
NoFiltering=True
UseMipmapping=False
-under [OpenGLDrv.OpenGLRenderDevice] and then save. NOTE: You can also change resolution for the game in this .ini file as well.
6.) Open Unreal Tournament, then Options, and then preferences
7.) Under Video Driver press the Change button
8.) Finally press Show other devices in the bottom right and then select OpenGL Support

i have a nonhosted website with information on various games dont really have anywhere to host it

Quake 1 was perfect since textures were so low res and it looks fantastic when you remove the filtering.

But Unreal seems to suffer from it since the textures are at a high enough res to where it ends up looking fugly without the ever so slight amount of blur.
Since all the shadows seem to be pre-baked, they end up looking like garbage without any form of smoothing to make the light areas flow into the dark ones.
Sure, the weapons and models looks a little nicer, but fucking up the level aesthetics really kills the look.

>>
>>341848682
>>each of which is a progressively lower resolution

Because, you clueless fucker, when a texture is very far away it only represents a small number of framebuffer pixels.

A texture that is normally 256x256 that is very far from the camera may only be the size of 32x32 pixels inside of the framebuffer. Trilinear mipmap interpolation is basically downsampling that 256x256 textures in 32x32 while weighing the color values of ALL the 256x256 texels.

There's no loss of detail (aside from that necessitated by the screen resolution) because all of the original texels have been involved in downscaling computation.

Without mipmapping, it just randomly grabs random texels and discards anything in between. That is the definition of detail loss.
>>
>>341844478
You can already make your own levels in OoT, romhacking tools existed for years.

You do need modelling knowledge though to actually build levels, but since the poly budget needs to be rather low you can get away with simple shapes where all the details are done with textures.

Also:
In RL, on clear days, there is no visible color refraction for several kilometers of distance.
In video games, you often have a super condensed fog, where you start seeing fog at 10-20 meters.

>In video games, you often have a super condensed fog, where you start seeing fog at 10-20 meters.

Probably because the game areas are smaller than in real life. But of course the color refraction fog isn't done to hide detail (original polygons/textures are still being rendered) just as a neat atmospheric effect.

>>341849673
I can't tell the difference between the two sides of this picture. But they're using nearest neighbor on both sides. Nearest neighbor with mipmapping doesn't usually have much benefit, mipmapping goes with trilinear filtering for the most benefit.

Also mipmapping doesn't work (nor is it necessary) when the screen resolution is way larger than the texture resolution. Blowing up a 1996 game to 1080p is doing that.

you are moving the goalposts but i also have the option to use linear mipmapping too. the effect is even more extreme, there are clear differences why deny them? look at the ceiling in the middle or the floor. mipmapping does reduce graphical detail and thats the point of the image
>>
>>341850254
Because Nights actually has distance fog (at the end of which the polygons are clipped entirely from the scene). It has a very small color refraction fog layer just before the actual distance fog to ease the transition.

Mario 64 only has the color refraction fog, it entirely lacks the distance fog (aka the polygon clipping fog).
>>
>>341850371
It's possible that in Quake the mipmapping levels have not been interpolated with the screen resolution.

What that means is that the game assumes that you are running at a lower resolution and has set the mipmap levels according to that assumption. If that is the case, then yes, mipmapping will cause a loss of detail when you are running Quake at a high resolution.

But that's merely a situation of mipmapping being applied incorrectly. If you are running a game with low resolution textures like Quake at a high resolution, mipmapping shouldn't even function.

This man gets it. You can see this in pretty much any SNES game where sprites expand or contract. Those details need to be filtered or else you get a non-integer based scaling effect where a single pixel will end up spreading to 2 or 3 pixels (or cathodes I guess), stretching in such a way that the details of the original sprite lose their intended shape.

If it wasn't obvious, pic related is unfiltered.

It has dithering instead of fog, with a form of LOD for the tiles.

It has a cut off for draw distance, with a fade out for the next set of tiles.
Fog is something else entirely. Look at the picture I am attaching, the gigantic white smear over EVERYTHING is fog.

Not quite although close; it's just a mach banding effect created by the rigid fog color levels.

>Fog is something else entirely

Look, I definitely do agree with you. Fogging is really supposed to be about the color refraction effect for atmospherics. That's exactly how the 3D computer graphics literature describes fogging.

It's just that when people talk about fogging in these threads what they really mean is Turok-style distance fog which is used to mask polygon clipping.

on the right you see the pixels and know how cheap this enemy was created, also you see the walls and know theres nothing behind it. On the left version you can immerse yourself much better and the place looks like an actual room

also the enemy looks more threatening since you fill the gaps with your imagination
>>
>>341851202
No, you are either too thick or too unwilling to learn how mipmapping works.

Correctly set mipmapping does *not* create a reduction of detail - in fact it's quite the opposite - it's supposed to maintain the level of detail through a calculated downscaling of texels to fit framebuffer pixels.

Mipmapping is linked to screen resolution and texture resolution. If the former is a lot higher than the latter then mipmapping should be turned off because it's unnecessary.

You're basically looking at mipmapping being applied incorrectly in fucking emulators and old games and going "waaahhhh look it makes the graphics worse!" Well no shit?
