You should play games that are based in fundamentals, like the Street fighter games. You should probably play the latest one, Street fighter 5, but if you don't want to commit or are poor, you could play Super Turbo or Third strike on fightcade.
I would recommend playing with a friend who is also new and gives a shit. It's easier to learn together.

Marvel vs Capcom 3 is alot of fun. Alot of people will tell you it's a broken mess though and it kinda is but you really only see that once you get good at the game and all the nonsense starts.
Otherwise it's pretty easy to play and you can do kinda flashy combos without too much execution.

I second playing Street Fighter. But you also want to try other subgenres. At least try an animu game, like GG or BlazBlue, and try a 3D one, like Tekken. Each will teach you different stuff.

Street Fighter 5 is pretty much the only option you have.
everything else has an extremely small playerbase which is almost entirely comprised of experienced veterans (this applies to old arcade fighters on fightcade in particular). catching up with that is going to be pretty much impossible for a newbie to the genre. only SF5 has a decent online mode, and enough population to always find matches within a few minutes at most.
also SF5 has several mechanics that make it much easier to learn than most other fighters, like the lenient input buffering period.

Yes for Street Fighter 3 in general. People didn't recognize any of the new characters after so many games that reused the SF2 cast and since each version introduced a new mechanic the skill floor was raised to a point that new players would get stomped to the point of quitting.

A good fighting game has at least some semblance of fundamentals, not a bunch of infinite combos and shit from other fighting games mashed together into one.
Skull girls has insanely. Long combos of guilty gear plus the tag system from King of fighters and marvel. Every normal chains into every normal. The developers had no idea what to balance or what the fuck to do.
But because it has a unique art style, waifus, and a text dump of a tutorial, you all think it's so great when it's not. It's fucking garbage.

MKX is super fun, don't let Capcucks tell you otherwise. It's a super fast paced combo-heavy mess, but if you're on PC i would suggest getting MK9 instead, and i'd totally play with you.
I've heard good things about Killer Instinct, haven't played much but it boils down to a huge mindgame-fest where you're looking for reads and opportunities to chain heavy combos and resets.
Street Fighter is probably the best game to get into if you want to learn the fundamentals of 6-button fighters, SF5 is super fun and the speed is a nice boost from USF4.
Even though they aren't technically fighting games either, smash has a huge competitive scene that is super fun to get into. If you're more into a patient game i suggest playing sm4sh, but if you're more into a combo heavy fighter you should definitely try Melee. They're both wonderfully polished games and have some of the most open and great communities out there, not to mention they're some of the easiest games to get into.
That's all the fighting games I know, but each are worth their salt in terms of fighting games. Capcucks that tell you anything not SF is trash aren't worth your time, experiment and find a game that's right for you.
