I actually asked two friend about that out of sheer curiosity and got some semi-interesting responses.
Friend 1: It's too colorful and like Yugioh, so you know they're just trying to sell stuff to kids. (coincidentally, this friend likes Pokemon anyway)
Friend 2: The main character is usually overpowered for no real reason (he cited Knights of Sidonia as an example, but either way, he likes a bunch of shounen series, so I don't see how that was a problem for him)
I have also seen others saying that the fighting seems impersonal and that mecha is unrealistic, but they seem to forget that they're watching anime in the first place.
