There was certainly more depth to DC when it came to the way that you could specialize with items, and it did a lot to make you feel more powerful. I just feel like I'm hiking up a grind mountain in OSL.

That's the way to go though, the claim of repetitiveness is sound, playing many books in one sitting can become quite boring.
I pretty much finished a book per day, never got bored this way.

Just started Velvet, and I'm personally really liking her. Certainly not as crazy as Cornelius, but her chain skills are pretty good. In terms of fun gameplay, I say Cornelius > Mercedes > Velvet > Gwendolyn > Oswald.
