I'm not trying to specifically defend zombies, but next time try an argument that doesn't apply to literally everything in the industry.

Personally, I kinda like the "super fast very large horde" concept -- almost like a toned-down World War Z. I can appreciate the tension seeing that mass screaming at you would elicit. Every other zombie game have zombies that are some combination of: aren't fast enough / aren't in large enough hordes / go down with a couple measly bodyshots. I never feel anxiety or tension; I never really feel sufficiently threatened. Seeing a horde of ~300 zombies coming towards me in an Olympic sprint might finally make me anxious again.

Don't get me wrong, it doesn't look amazing or anything. I'll pick it up eventually for sub-$30 unless it inexplicably gets really positive word-of-mouth.

Seconded. Hard to put my finger on it and it's easy to drop it early due to minimal plot and some clunkiness but once I got a few hours in and started the "grab a posse for a scavenging run" and "upgrading/supplying/defending outposts" gameplay loop, I couldn't stop playing. I pretty much 100%ed in a week and will probably never touch it again, but it was time well spent.

tl;dr - It's surprisingly good and worth a shot for $10 or under.

Zombies are old and tired. Developers of anything really need to find something new or not bother with monsters at all.

Because even though there's 10000 games copying off of it, DayZ mod is the only good one, and the DayZ standalone is the only decent one, and the other 99.9999% of them are complete ass.

These games say they've got a hold of survival or horror or whatever, but DayZ mod with it's very simple survival mechanics based in a 2009 game manages to outdo all the random shit they push now, that all just turn into some giant battle royale shitfest, where you can craft M60s out of antlers and semen.

Aside from that last point State of Decay already does most of that desu. Also Its sequel is coming out 2017 so it will just expand on that even further.

Once you get the hang of it they're manageable.

In the mod, it takes a while to get used to them, but because they have weird hitboxes and can randomly break your legs or cause you bleeding and infection, if you haven't got decent medical stock they can leave you fucked. No antibiotics and that zombie from 2 hours ago kills you anyway because he got you sick. And they're as fast as you are, you have to get them to lose sight of you because you can't outrun them straight up. And it's all complicated because you don't start with a weapon at all, so you can be fucked before you can find anything to defend yourself with.

On top of that, they can see and hear you from 100s of meters away. The biggest problem with DayZ mod zombies is they're easy to take down, and there isn't a lot of them.

DayZ Standalone the zombies are a little tougher, especially if you haven't got a weapon, but now you can actually straight outrun them.

Once you get pretty experienced and get used to things you mostly avoid them or kill them pretty easily.

I'm not sure, I played through the first one in it's entirely, I guess there was just a certain brutality to it that kept it interesting, it was compared to borderlands, and that couldn't even keep my interest for 3 hours, things just felt so repetitive in Borderlands...maybe it was the innate desperation and tension in Dead Island that kept me playing.

They also need death animations like in outlast where you can see yourself get your head pulled off, or in DOOM, zombie games need to add death shit where you can watch yourself get torn apart and eaten, and it shouldn't be a quick thing, but drawn out.

There was a bunch of environmental interacts to slow the horde down. Like dropping logs down and the mechanic of them stepping on each other to get up is pretty awesome.

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of these really closely bunched together zombies all shoulder to shoulder and nuts to butts style of horde that all more like a liquid.

Hordes that are more spread out but just as numberous like this I feel are superior.

Low potential. They didn't show off safe zones, because you have to take a bounty hunting mission from someone, didn't show inventory and how the bike matters in terms of repairing or gasoline maybe. They showed world war z zombies, which is fine I guess.

Its better than slow zombies and better than fast but low numbers zombies.
