Has many similarities to FF6 and I felt this was the true FF13.
One of the few RPGs were the bad guy actually fucks over the world and destroys a ton of shit. Instead of the usual stopping it before it happens.
Final boss fight music is top notch 10/10,
World map music is comfy as fuck.

I really liked the dreams in the game. For those of you who haven't played, you can collect dreams around the world which are memories and stories surrounding the world and main characters. They're just short written stories, but they gave me a lot of feels.

The game was mostly garbage. Graphics were so-so, battle system was average, plot was pretty forgettable.
The fucking memory sequences though. Jesus Christ. So many fucking feels, so goddamn good. If only whoever did that shit had more to do with the actual game itself.

Game isn't as bad as you make out in my opinion. As far as JRPGs go it's got quite a lot to offer. Great soundtrack, solid gameplay, a story that tries to do things a little differently. The only real mar is certain voice acting choices.
Then again, I liked Ni No Kuni (despite its dumb helper ai and constant tutorials) so maybe I'm more forgiving than most when it comes to JRPGs.

The story outside of short stories wasn't anything special. Should've just let short story writer write the whole fucking thing.
On the soundtrack side it's seriously one of the worst ones Uematsu has done, nothing really stands out save for battle themes.

I grew up playing turn based RPGs for hundreds, maybe thousands of hours, I experienced masterpieces like MarioRPG, FF6, FF7, Xenogears, Legend of Dragoon, Legend of Legaia, etc etc etc. And I do cherish these memories.
Now I'm much older. I just turned 30, I have a full time job, a wife and kid, and I have much, much less free time. Playing a 40 hour game would take me 3-4 months of my free time.
Like I said, though, I'm happy for you guys.

I disagree on XIII. It's a mess. Barring the Snow vs Shiva boss fight, the first ten hours of the game is mindlessly easy, confusing (plot wise), slow, boring since you can't really do much customising, and only has one remotely likeable character, (the black guy).
Then the game decides to open up the battle system and then suddenly ramps up the difficulty so fast, to the point where you can die very easily in certain parts despite not really doing anything wrong. Some enemies just do a bizarrely high amount of damage.
A large portion of the game is so damn linear it makes FFX seem open world. A handful of early game side quests would have made things at least tolerable.
Sure,the game does get better, but it doesn't change the fact that the story is just madness incarnate. And no character irritates me more than Vanille in a JRPG. Maybe Hope. Maybe early Luke from Tales of the Abyss.

Yeah you are right. A lot of JRPGs are linear but the illusion of open/living world is arguably important in a JRPG. Its world building. It's giving you something to explore and get a little extra contextual feedback to immerse yourself a bit. It gives you the chance to rest up a bit and get ready for the next chunk of game. (It's a pacing thing)
FFXIII just feels like an empty rush-job. Like they didn't even try. One looooooonnngggg corridor with the odd piece of scenery to look at before it sweeps you along to the next part. The only time the line branches was so that you could open like 1 lonely chest at a dead end.
It makes the environments feel dead and lifeless.
