I always liked it. Sure, it's not as deep as Ninja Gaiden or DMC, but those games are pretty much pure fighting games.
God of War has (robus) plaftorming, more exploration and some puzzle solving, plus of course great epic scale and vistas and giant boss fights that make it a bit cinematic. A BIT. The new one is just terrible. Anyway, while the combat might be a bit easier (still very good and not nearly as bad as everyone is saying, especially on higher difficulties) than counterparts it's still a very well designed series for the most part, with mostly player driven input. QTEs were popular back then or it made them popular, so can't blame them for that, but /v/s beloved Bayonetta is full of that shit.

You won't get titans but frost giants and other beasts now. The biggest difference between olds games and new is combat and combat encounters. Old camera allowed for big fights, new camera won't see more than 5 people at once probably.
