If we are looking at release dates, then we'd be comparing Bonk to Super Mario Bros. 3, and that's where I think bonk falls flat. The physics in Bonk aren't quite as spot on as mario, but you get extra ait mobility by repeatedly flipping in the air, and you can jump into enemies from the bottom as your head is your main weapon. It's a graphical step up because of the 16-bit video card, but that's debatable because of how awesome Mario 3 looked on NES. Overall, not quite as deep, but definitely a fun little platfomer that the sequel makes even better.

Its a 3D game that plays very much like a 2D game, it has 2D fundamentals such as space control and footsies. the game has a large focus on meter management and you want to try and force a position where you have beast and your opponent doesn't. The game was mechanically very deep with lots of sub mechanics and offers something that really hasnt been explored all that much in other fighters.
That said Primal Fury was one of the worse game in the series, they dumbed the game down quite heavily and removed or simplified many of the games mechanics.
