I grew up with the idea that dubs were made for kids that couldn't read yet. As soon as I could read I preferred to watch movies with subtitles in my native language, and English voices. This is also how I learned English, at least until the point at which I started reading books.

Japanese acting leans more towards theatrics, which serves animation well. On the other hand, American actors are better at displaying the subtleties required in live action. there's nothing wrong with a character being flat but the majority of every episode is dialogue about what these characters are feeling (which is always the same thing every time because they're so one note)
one of the secondary tier of characters big motivation is that some guy got devoured by titans but he's a character thats in like one scene, why the fuck should I care. It felt like something from a B-tier zombie movie where they just murder characters at random with no real buildup
