I can only really expect what they've lined out in their Final Approach piece. I admit, I haven't really stuck to Starbound due to mostly only having the single-player to experience due to a small and quiet fanbase, but I've been happy with what I've been seeing. A lot of the elements that they've promised to come in 1.0 are evident with the skeletal systems already in the game, and they've really taken quite a few strides in making updates that also include elements the players have been asking for.
In my opinion, Starbound's fatal flaw will always be Early Access. It's one of the few games that actually took it as a dev strategy instead of just being extended beta. It grew and changed as roughly as any game would in development, but because it was splayed out for everyone to see, a lot of things got misconstrued. Due to that, a lot of people still won't go back and see that things have definitely advanced and the game is getting to be everything it promised to be.
I wish that more people would try it so it'd only take a moment to find players, but it's a comfy game when played solo and it's really coming into its own on the final stretch, so I'm looking forward to full release.
