Graphics don't ever need to improve /v/. That's right.

Graphics don't ever need to improve /v/. That's right. They've hit a point where they can facilitate any artstyle flawlessly (except for super-realism, which is a shit artstyle anyway).

Developers need to focus on improving physics, animations and artificial intelligence. They are far more important to the 'timelessness' of a video game in my opinion.

Thoughts?
>>
I agree, graphics have hit that point where any improvements are barely noticeable. Now they need to focus on making good games.
>>
>>341734687
Yeah exactly. I feel like graphics were good enough around the Ps2/Gamecube generation. Anything else is just excess decoration.
>>
>>341734542
I was already fine with Deus Ex tier graphics. What I want is more TECHNOLOGY and player freedom. But of course it would be near impossible to sell a game with graphics like that no matter how innovative the gameplay was.
>>
>>341735016
Which deus ex?
>>
>>341735313
Only one is called "Deus Ex", mate. Obviously I meant the first. It's clean, simple, sharp, and serves its purpose perfectly while still being atmospheric as fuck.
>>
Games need to put all those on the second seat and focus on GAMEplay first and then everything else.
>>
>>341734832
except for animations and physics were fucking awful on PS2
>>
>>341735016
>>341735552
>Deus Ex tier graphics
God, no.
On the other hand...i would settle with Mafia and Max Payne graphics.
>>
>>341735632
Physics, animations and AI are all part of 'GAMEplay', anon.

Yeah that's why I just said graphics

>we're barely getting decent reflections now
>graphics are done
Okay
>>
>>341734542
they (companies who make tvs/monitors) actually think photorealism is somewhere around 16k, going by the current 4k terminology.

next up will be rapid physics hardware, if jiggle physics doesn't get banned by retarded liberals before then.

I hear a few people are close to real time raycasting too. thats when VR will actually take off cause you won't know you're wearing a headset anymore.
>>
>>341735824
graphics is part of that

a horribly textured low-poly bastardization of a human with good animation would be shit and you're a retard for even thinking PS2 is good enough

>I need reflections for muh games

Yeah that's just excess unnecessary shit. And you're wrong anyway
>>
>>341735957
No, graphics and animations are two completely separate things. The Ps2 gen had good enough graphics to accommodate fantastic artstyles. Good animations would only look retarded on games aiming for realism. That's the fatal flaw in your post, 'retard'.
>>
>>341735786
I don't really care to be honest. But to be fair it doesn't even look particularly ugly to me. It's one of those games that looks dreadful on screenshots, but once you are actually playing you don't notice anything wrong.
>>
>>341735997
Old games could have reflections because graphics worked differently back then.

Most modern games don't have them, and if they do they're often confined to small rooms.
The most recent UE4 update added some fancy reflection tools so maybe we'll see more soon.

Hello faglord. Jak and Daxter still has animations better than most games today, even though Jak is obviously of a lesser graphical fidelity than today's humans.

And guess what. It doesn't look bad at all.
>>
>>341736083
so you want every game to just have cartoon graphics?
>>
>>341736537
So games are either realistic or cartoony? Is that what you're implying?

yes

>Improving physics, animations and artificial intelligence.

Issue is that it's harder to press a game with any of those, graphics are very easy to sell because of how apparent they are, AI, animations and (somewhat) physics are more obscure and harder to notice, at least for the average consumer.

Not disagreeing that I'd like to see those improved more than graphics at this point, I just doubt we're ever going to see graphics take a backseat to any of them for commercial purposes.

What happened to the games that made and used cool technology for gameplay purposes like the destruction in red faction guerilla?

I wonder if this is a 'cartoon' because it's 2D
>>
>>341736905
True. Still don't need to blow up the budget for graphical fidelity though
>>
>>341736419
Animations were part of what pushed me to beat the game. So much fun to watch things move. I kind of had to drag myself through the game itself though.
>>
>>341734542
Pretty much.

The AI stagnation is the most disappointing thing to me about gaming. That and the lack of using new technologies.

In this case, old technologies never used at all:

Animations also help with the feel of the mechanics. Jak felt incredibly fluid to use due to the responsiveness of each move he made which manifested in the animations. Animations are a very underrated part of gameplay and the feel of mechanics
>>
It's a moot argument anyway because that's a drop in the bucket compared to modern over-bloated marketing budgets

I have to agree with you there. Modern games are really visually overloading at times. Deus Ex may look dated but at least you can tell exactly what's going on at a glance.

I agree
We should focus on improving physics and performance

Implying the graphic card jews will allow this

Not when looking at them makes me want to bleach my eyes and vomit on my screen.

Clear graphics is good. That art style is rubbish though.
>>
>>341738741
I agree with you on that. I like the direction they took with good visibility, but the artstyle is bad. That's not really a matter of graphics though. That same screenshot would look infinitely better with HoMM3 style art, but technically that wouldn't be any more graphically advanced.
>>
Until textures are good enough to read fine print of random pieces of paper lying on the floor graphics technology has a long way to go. Also realistic lighting and voluminous clouds. Actually, no technology should ever stop. You might think its pointless right now but you'll be thankful when youre 80 and playing the latest photorealistic VR games.
>>
>>341739669
This. How much of a luddite do you have to be to say that technology doesn't need to improve.
>>
You have no fucking idea what you're talking about, my man. Technology might seem meaningless when you're seeing it pass by in degrees, but it improving is gonna be helpful to every kind of game, including the simple 2d ones.
>>
>>341741252
Point is, we are focusing too much on graphics and everything else is getting left behind. Perhaps it's time we give those other areas a little more attention.
>>
>>341734542
No, there's still significant room for improvement.
