I've enjoyed all of the games in the series that I've played so far, but I find 4 to be the worst of the bunch by far. Even without the second half, I still would've disliked it for being really short, but to double the length of the game like that was just awful. A lot of neat ideas, otherwise.
I haven't played Downpour or Book of Memories, but BoM looks terribly awful. The comics are hit and miss but they're all nice. The first movie is cool, the second movie is horrendous.

In a sense this is true because the game began life as simply Room 302. However, it was always at least a spin-off of Silent Hill and the most important thing was simply that it be different to the previous games. Certainly if Silent Hill had not existed we would not have gotten the idea for The Room, so in that sense they have always been together.
