So how is this game in anyway changing everything? The biggest difference appears to be an unusual dedication to Kratos's character. But otherwise it looks the same.

You're right. Instead they had Kratos walk 10 minutes straight along a cliffside killing pointless mob enemies that dies almost automatically upon contact with anything Kratos does. And then it ends with a bigger enemy that doesn't die automatically, but that just means the quick time event pops up allowing Kratos to climb all over the enemy opening up even more quick time events until the quick time events finally kills the enemy.
In both scenarios you do nothing but casually jogging forward without really doing anything only to end it with a few action cutscenes controlled by quick time events. Which is also exactly how the trailer of the new game ends too.

You know you would actually have to damage the enemy, staggering them into the quicktime event, right? the QTE was the icing on the cake, sure they overstayed their welcome(especially in 3) but you would have to actually play the game correctly to get the QTE.

The reason GoW was loved so much was because it was the first time you got to play as a character that's not good, or bad, he's just a guy who wants revenge. And the story also painted the "gods" as sort of bad guys in a sense. It showed how flawed the "gods" were and how they weren't unstoppable forces Almighty forces. It's good take on the mythological Greek story. Kratos is a good/loved character because he has a perfect balance of alpha male/badass without coming off as some edgy faggot (like every fucken game today) he's one of the best video game characters of all time and I don't give a fuck about the gameplay that much, just the mild RPG/skill/weapon advancement to keep you wanting to play/interested, combined with a great main character.
