Why get a sound card?
>>
>>341666263
I am new at building a pc, don't I need the sound card so that I can plug in my speakers and shit?
>>
>>341666537

Kek

Don't you realize your motherboard already has a sound card built in?
>>
>>341666537

The motherboard comes with an integrated hd sound module

Honestly I bought a sound card and the sound was only a bit more clearer. But not a huge gap. It's a waste of cash imho

Oh, sweet. Didn't realize that. Like I said, I have never built a PC before, so I am trying to learn as much as I can before buying.

Yeah the mobo also has a network adapter built it so you don't need to buy one.
>>
>>341667013

Are you actually buying a 970? It's an older card that's already outdated. I mean I'd get 1070 or wait on the rx 490 in that situation
>>
>>341665814
you dont need a cpu fan unless youre overclocking, which is impossible with the cpu you chose

you dont need a $150 motherboard. $100 tops

dump the sound card
>>

Though it's only for eternet.

>>
>>341665814
http://pcpartpicker.com/list/r72Mpb

fixed the following: removed uneccessarily overpriced MOBO designed for unlocked CPU's and replaced it with a H series mobo that will just werk

got a cheaper case, it's not a decoration, just saved you $70 there.

removed audio/ethernet cards (wtf?)

replaced PSU with a moderately more powerful one of an equally reliable brand

vastly improved your gaming performance by going with a 1070, this build is ACTUALLY cheaper than your current one, even more so because the founders edition of the 1070 is a scam. get the normal edition to save $50. That brings the total build price to around $850.

I would replace the HDD with a 7200RPM one and maybe throw in a cheap SSD for your OS
>>
>>341668348
forgot to mention also removed your aftermarket heatsink fan. The one Intel includes is just fine since you won't be overclocking.

dual gpu's are gimmicky as fuck and come with tons of driver issues. Some games out-right don't support multiple GPU's. No point in spending that much moolah on them considering a 600w pSU can probably run dual 1070's just fine nowadays. GPU's are becoming super power efficient.

>>341669694
remember not to buy the FOUNDER'S EDITION. It's a scam. The regular 1070 will retail for $379. You can probably find a decent multi-fan version of the 1070 for under $400 too

I'll post in here. 2k monitor and graphics card upgrade incoming. Do I really need a new CPU/Mobo?
>>
>>341670156
Probably not, at least for the moment. In another year or two Vulkan and D3D12 games that bottleneck on 4 thread CPUs are going to start being more common. Hopefully in that time AMD succeeds in both boosting their single thread performance to get it back on par, and makes 8 core/16 thread CPUs the new standard.

I would wait on the processor upgrade because it would entail new RAM + Mobo as well. I'd wait until Zen at least to see if AMD can finally compete. But that CPU looks like it should last 2-3 years if the last 3-4 Intel upgrade cycles are any indication.
>>
Upgraded rig when the 1070 I want comes out. Goal is running 1080p/144hz games great and some VR. I have a SeaSonic 650W PSU that can handle this build, but it's getting old. So even if I should down watt, I'm going to get a new one regardless.

Intel CPUs will never be as good as they used to be until AMD is competitive again. You kids don't know how good the Mendocino Celerons were, or how great the early Athlon and Athlon 64 hardware was.

We will never again see a motherboard like the BP6 engineered to specifically enable a pair of $100 chips to be better in every way than the top of the line hardware.

I can't be bothered to read this thread's replies, but I can give you some tips: 'gaming' hardware is a meme, this means gaming motherboards, gaming memory, gaming peripherals, etc. Don't get something just because it says 'gaming' on the tin, but don't let it stop you either. Get it because it's quality equipment and it suits your needs, regardless of how it's marketed.
Your CPU comes with a stock heatsink, so you don't need to get an aftermarket cooler if you don't want to. Also great that you're getting more than 8GB of RAM, that's definitely the way to go.
If you want to save money, consider getting an AMD graphics card. They deliver decent performance on a budget. Nvidia performance tends to be slightly better, they're usually more efficient and run cooler (longer lifetimes), but you pay extra because of that.
What tower you want genuinely doesn't matter. Just make sure that your graphics card will fit inside it and that you like the way it looks. Also consider fan mounting points and hard drive bays. I also don't see any point in getting an independent wired network adapter, your motherboard already has an Ethernet port. If you want to have wireless for your desktop, get a motherboard that has a wireless adapter built in or buy one separately.

you can skimp lightly on a few components, namely your cpu (to non-K) and your motherboard and have extra dosh for a 1080 which would improve your frame rate way more than an OC'd 6600k

the keyboard will probably be fine but the mouse is gonna be absolute shit

you don't need 16GB and you don't need RAM with fancy heatsinks. 8GB is fine. spending $70 on RAM is fucking asinine and better spent elsewhere. i would put it towards a case. the case you chose isn't bad at all, but you'll have enough to get a more quality case with more features imo

>What's the best way to cool a PC? Will slapping an industrial fan next to the fucker keep it cool enough?
NO

You need to get the heat out of your case. Exhaust fans at the top and rear are usually good placements, as the front (and possibly side) fans act as intake. Computer components aren't made of delicate china, they're made to operate at high temperatures due to differences in world climate. If they get to 90 degrees Celsius, you have a problem. Obviously you want it way less than this.

Do you have any windows or anything? Opening them could help. My windows have been open all Summer so that the cooler morning/evening air comes in.

>>
>>341676254
>>341676467
I had a read through the thread and realised I forgot to mention that those anons recommending SSDs are 100% right. To determine a size, you'll have to estimate what you'll use it for. I recommend only using it for your OS and any programs that launch with Windows, or any programs you deem necessary to start quicker. This will make your OS (and obviously programs) boot quicker. Putting games on there will decrease load times, but I don't recommend that. I have a 256GB SSD, and I have about 50GB left, and I strictly only put my OS (W10) and boot programs on there, which is only 9 programs.
Also consider getting an external drive. Not to use as an external drive, but because external drives and just internal drives with a fancy case and a USB port. You can often find good deals on external drives that would cost significantly more if you bought the drive alone. Just get a good one and pop it out of the case. I also recommend getting a larger drive, unless you have other drives lying around or plan to uninstall games as you finish them. 5TB drives are pretty cheap nowadays.
>>
>>341678081
Sorta okay for 3D games but if you want to play newer MOBAs then get a better graphics card.

Do check the specifications on your motherboard first. The less you pay for your motherboard and the more you pay for whatever is delivering your sound, the more likely it is you will want a sound card.

why not 144hz 1080p

Can you tell somehow how much power a build is taking?
I want to upgrade when the 480 comes out but I don't know if the power supply can take it since it's a generic chink thing that I know nothing about and apparently neither does the internet.

Could this run Doom reliably?

I wouldn't bet any money on it. The bare minimum for 1080p/60fps performance is this build: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/Lonxu/saved/MRNmP6 anything less than that and you're severely compromising on your performance
>>
>>341679698
It's considerably stronger than a 386, so yes.
Is the 730 supported by the game?
>>
So, with the new shit coming out this month. And July 4 being around the corner. I should probably wait to buy my first PC right?

Anything I should do in the meantime to prepare to build my first PC?
>>
>>341680169
make sure you have another pc to look a building guide on and a screwdriver with the pirated win7 disc ready alongside with all the driver software
>>
>>341680169
In the forthcoming weeks you should avoid all electronics and carpets to avoid static build up.
>>
>>341680169
You can buy everything now but the gpu. And of you buy an actual good cpu it will run many games without a graph card.

PSUs on pre-builts tend to be cheap shit
don't ever skimp on the PSU or you'll regret it
that said open it up and then check the tiny ass writing on the PSU, it will tell you the wattage

Put RX 480 under custom since it's not out
>>
>>341681178
>>341681317
I took a picture of a sticker in the PSU on one of the times I opened it up to clean, but hell if I know where it went.
So far it's worked with that build from my pic for like 5 years without frying anything.

If you had to guess, how much wattage does that build seem to draw? I've never overclocked if that helps, so it's running pretty much stock, CPU fan and all.

It's pretty much a fact I have to get a trusty PSU anyway if I wanna get a 480, but hey, curiosity is a funny thing.
>>
>>341682060
The one thing I would change is the PSU. I prefer modular. it's probably only $20 more and saves room in the case and makes it cleaner looking
>>
>>341682560
Bump for an answer.
>>
>>341685150
You can check the power usage of the parts in their description. Add then up. Don't forget that the mobo has its own power usage.
>>
>People building low-end PC's
Why even bother? Just save up for another two weeks or month or something. At least remember to get a decent PSU so you don't fuck yourself over in the future.

The descriptions of the parts from Speccy itself you mean?
>>
>>341687289
still better than 99% of rigs in the woooooorld :^)
>>
>>341687379
I mean the official TDPs. Your cpu and gpu has them in every description, but you can look up the mobo as well. HDDs use about 25 watts iirc.
>>
>>341688136
Apparently the TDP for a 6670 is 66W, and for an i7 2600 it's 95W.
I couldn't be bothered to check all the other parts cause I'm on mobile now, but I have a funny feeling the rest won't add up as to assume the PSU is anything outstanding.

I'll double check later. Just to be sure though, every part has an individual power draw, right? How would I know how much the RAM uses for example?

A few tips.

>GTX 970
The worst time to buy one. Radeon RX 480 is out in 2 weeks, will outperform it for only $200. GTX 1060 is likely to be announced in the near future to compete with the 480 and will likely be around the same price/performance. If you need Nvidia (you don't, but if you insist) the GTX 1070 is worth the extra money. Only for a partner board design though, Founder's Edition is concentrated snake oil

>no SSD
240/256gb, Samsung or Sandisk recommended

>Seagate
Oh Jesus, don't do that
http://pcpartpicker.com/product/2RPfrH/hitachi-internal-hard-drive-0f10311
>>
>>341692456
>$200

Or you can not gimp yourself and wait for the customs which will be 1.25x better than the reference one
>>
>>341667013
Don't bother with the 212 Evo fan since the 6400 comes with a fan and it doesn't OC anyways since its a non-K model, stock fan is good enough.
Change MSI mobo to an Asus or Gigabyte which are more reliable models and the earlier especially has a very good BIOS for checking temps and controlling the system efficiently.
Change the 970 to a 480 if your waiting a bit or if not go for the r7 360 as a temporary card as it still has 4gb for under $200.
Everything else seems fine, also if you can go for Seasonic and if your current rig is 300-350w don't bother getting a 650w gold PSU as its overkill, 500-550w at gold is enough.
